Fake update messages when viewing topics?! (Google Chrome)
Hi all,
I couldn't find a better name for that topic and I don't know if this is the absolute right area for this, but I just wanted to let you know:
In the past week when I was going through the forums I was sometimes forwarded to a strange looking update site when I simply wanted to view a topic e.g. in the Forza 6 section here on TORA.
Instead of being shown the selected topic, an external web page opened in the same tab, telling me that there is an update available for my browser (Google Chrome).
Of course I didn't trust that thing because I remembered how Chrome actually informs about updates and simply returned to the previous page. Then I made a second attempt on viewing the desired topic and everything was back to normal again.
I suppose that the hosts of the forums simply added a new way to show some ads before you can view the actual topic and somebody is using that ad-space to distribute his "Browser Update".
Anyway I wanted to warn you about this kind of "Update Notification". It is definitely not sent by your browser (you can see it when taking a look into the address bar when it's being shown) and I recommend that you shouldn't download anything from there.
If somebody also recognised this kind of "ad" (maybe even with a different browser), feel free to let me and the other interested know in here.
and see you soon on the track

Re: Fake update messages when viewing topics?! (Google Chrome)
Does this happen on other Forumotion boards or just TORA? Does it happen everytime, or occasionally, or was it just the once?
Need more info, this has nothing to do with us. We don't host ads on the forum other than the small Google one on the left but Forumotion will show ads if you aren't signed in.
This may be spam in your browser if you've downloaded something, sometimes dodgy downloads will add strange extensions and set your homepage to something weird etc

Re: Fake update messages when viewing topics?! (Google Chrome)
It happens occasionally and the same also applies for our forums (which is also forumotion).
And no, my browser/computer doesn't have any kind of trashware, adware, toolbar or anything else that could cause this installed.
But it hasn't happened again since I posted that stuff here
I'll keep you posted.

Re: Fake update messages when viewing topics?! (Google Chrome)
I know what you are on about frog, those fake upload / download ads annoy the hell out of me and you are right that since you complained about them all I see now are what I call "normal" adverts.
Re: Fake update messages when viewing topics?! (Google Chrome)
Update: Now that sh*t happens on my tablet! (Safari on iPad)
As soon as I want to get to a different page within one topic, I'm being forwarded multiple times and get seriously annoying ads.
Clicking on back in my browser doesn't work anymore, too. I need to return by three to four pages until I'm back on TORA. But it's not the recently visited page...it is the start page of the forums again
I will upload some screenshots of a few examples soon.
However it totally destroys the experience and I am unable to view the latest pages of e.g. the TEC Registration Thread because I'm immediately being forwarded to these sh*tty ads.
I know that ads are needed to finance the servers/forums. But this is way too much!
BTW: I'm watching the forums in the desktop version on my tablet. I don't know if the mobile version has the same issues.

And there is no way to avoid it...even aborting while the ad page is being loaded will not get me back to visited topic on TORA. I can only return to the start page.
