CJ Wilson Cayman Cup Round 3: Laguna Seca

Post by BigBen0913 on Thu 19 May 2016 - 0:57

Round Three - Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca - May 24, 2016
Welcome to Round 3 of the CJ Wilson Caymen Cup.  This week we are going to the Monterrey Peninsula to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, home to the infamous corner called "The Corkscrew."  The track's origins lie in the need for a safer, more permanent place for racing that took place on public roads in Pebble Beach, CA during the 1950's.  Since then, Laguna Seca has hosted many different types of racing including IndyCars and Trans-Am.

Qualifying - This will be the typical "6 laps and out" qualifying.  Drivers will have 1 warm-up lap, 4 flying laps, and 1 cool down lap during which drivers will park on Turn 2, the Andertti Hairpin, where lobby hosts will take a screen shoot to collect times.  Remember that drivers should be/appear online 15 minutes prior to qualifying start.

Race - There will be one race that will last either 90 minutes or 50 laps, depending on which occurs first.  For Laguna Seca, that will be a full 50 laps.  Be sure to figure out your pit windows ahead of time so that you don't catch yourself out.  The race will start in a rolling start format with grid positions determined by qualifying.  Once the race starts, drivers will use the first lap to line up in the proper order.

What's the call on pit exit as there isn't actually a line telling u when to rejoin track

Ben, in the multiplayer lobby's there is the option of rolling start, so I think you can use it. I was testing last night and this option avoid the jump start in the race.

But there is no way to set the grid order.

Looking for the ruling on pit exit as well... B lobby had some sketchy pit exits on Sebring... Can only imagine what this could turn out like.

I'd suggest pit exit be allowed before the brow of the hill and all drivers exiting must stay to the left until the first left hand bend to ensure drivers exiting pits can see oncoming race traffic in their mirrors, depending on racing view selected, and so that oncoming traffic can see those exiting the pits. If pit exits are allowed after the hill then this may cause a number of cases where cars will come into contact due to not seeing each other until after the hill.
Series organisers call though, above is just my suggestion as a race steward. But I'd suggest clarification regarding this topic come fairly soon rather than last minute to ensure everyone participating in round 3 is fully aware of the pit exit rules for Laguna Seca.

I would actually hope the pitting cars rejoin after the hill crest, as the racing line naturally pulls to the right at that point. this would minimize the ill effects of having to swerve to avoid.

Another note: in testing via Rivals mode, I have noticed quite a few taking liberty of track limits in the right hand portion of the Corkscrew. I'd suggest being mindful of doing this come race time, as we'll be on the lookout for this sort of advantage.

I found this browsing around, and thought it may help some of you out there wandering how to navigate Laguna Seca. There is also some info about pit exit strategy listed in its respective area on the map. Enjoy!

Cool, but...

... T10 has placed tire walls on the actual pit out.

Just to clarify, this race is 50 laps and NOT 90 minutes, correct?

Correct. 50 Laps equates somewhere near 75-80 minutes.
