CJ Wilson Cayman Cup Round 8: Virginia International Raceway

Post by BigBen0913 on Wed 27 Jul 2016 - 3:21

Round Eight - Virginia International Raceway Full Circuit - August 2, 2016
Welcome to Round 8 of the CJ Wilson Cayman Cup presented by Logitech G.  This week, we head to one of the newest circuits to Forza Motorsports, Virginia International Raceway, or as it is better known as VIR.  VIR has a reputation of being the toughest road course in North America, and has a history that is as colorful as the track itself.  The circuit as well was born from racing enthusiasts looking for a permanent racing location in 1955 with the circuit being completed in 1957.  VIR's first official event was a star-studded SCCA race, including names such as Carl Haas, Bob Holbert, Bruce Jennings, and race-winner Carroll Shelby.  The course has stayed very much the same since its early days, but has been refreshed several times over the years.  In 1998, the track was restructured to turn the race track into more of a country club type of feel.  Several different layouts have also been added to the tracks overtime and now include the Grand East, the Grand West, the North, the South, and the Patriot Circuits.  For our race, we will however be using the classic Full Circuit.

Qualifying - This will be the typical "6 laps and out" qualifying.  Drivers will have 1 warm-up laps, 4 flying laps, and 1 cool down lap during which drivers will park on Turn 1, the Horseshoe, where lobby hosts will collect times.  Remember that drivers should be/appear online 15 minutes prior to qualifying start, and should keep in-lobby chat to a minimal.

Race - There will be one race that will last either 90 minutes or 50 laps, depending on which occurs first.  For VIR, that will be a total of 42 laps.  Be sure to figure out your pit windows ahead of time so that you don't catch yourself out.  The race will start in a rolling start format with grid positions determined by qualifying.  Once the race starts, drivers will use the first lap to line up in the proper order.

Remember: To sign-in for the race, please use the sign-in form that you can find here:

VIR Track Limits

Post by BigBen0913 on Wed 27 Jul 2016 - 3:35

As this officially the first TORA race to take part at VIR, this is the first time that the track limits will be looked at for this track.  Remember that the over arching "keep two wheels on the track at all times" rule applies when discussing these track limits.  For VIR, on the inside of the turns, the kerbing has this Cream/Yellow/Green pattern.   For areas of the track were this is the case, please observe the cream part of the kerb as the track limit line as seen below.

One the exit of Turn 3, drivers are reminded that they should not use the huge run-off area when following this line.  The image below shows what is incorrect.

For the Snake section of the lap, remember to observe to track limits and to stay out of the grass.

When exiting Oak Tree, much like Turn 3, drivers should not use the entire run-off section of the track.  Refer to the following two images to see what we expect drivers to do.

Lastly, when exiting the pits, remember to follow the indicated white line the whole way out of the pits and do not pull on to the racing line until the coast is clear.
