Post by CQR Aero Wed 7 Mar 2012 - 15:30

Following on from Jamie's comment. A proper "mentoring" or "driving school" program could work well. I've done a small amount of work with Gary in the past, and I think he'd agree that it helped his confidence and results quite a lot. Unfortunately I'm neither the best driver to start with, nor available enough lately to sink the time required into it.

Perhaps what we could do is have a series for the "lower ranked" drivers which runs fortnightly, and on the alternate week, a "school" session is run with an experienced "high ranking" driver hosting, taking people slowly around the circuit to demostrate lines, braking and acceleration points, tips and tricks etc. Multiple hosts/lobbies if required. Then the guys have a chance to go away and practice the circuit with those tips in mind, and then race there a week later.

The difficulty I suppose, is deciding where to draw the line between "fast" and "slow" drivers, and if a "slow" driver takes to the lessons quicker than the others and becomes a "fast" driver sooner, are they kicked from the series?!?!

Building on this..

Could we have driver categories based on experience/talent (linked to a ranking system) Pro/Pro-am/Amateur type thing? - Could this be linked to championship points, builds or handicaps in certain types of championships?? Possibly any future spec racing championships we decide to run.

Types of Racing
Spec racing (PI limit or with locked builds) - to get more interest from new guys and the likes of me who want to arrive and drive sometimes. - Possibly builds are available via the organisers storefront. - use more unusual tracks - GaryP is always a good source for this sort of thing Junior Rally Champ/VTEC challenge etc..

Stock/production racing - for same reasons as spec racing. - BMW Z4 GT3, Maserati MC GT, V8 supercars, SEAT supercup, DTM, GT500, GT300s the list goes on..

Possibly have a calendar of wednesday/thursday night races - like the V8 supercars being organised (just possibly slightly less hardcore on the assists Wink ) 2 to 4 tracks/races a night short ish races, plenty of opportunity to win or lose..

Tune/Build Suppliers
I liked the idea of suppliers providing cars to other drivers/teams - can we expand on this and make it an area on the forum where we can find guys who are offering such services?

Happy to help and get involved in any of the above..

Chaddy (FranchittiFan) is talking about organising a more official V8's for after my little 3 weeker ends, will most likely have more friendly assist rules with that ;O)

I was more going with the main Sunday night championship that we have at TORA have the GT Pro Championship and a GT Ams Cahampionship. With the Pro being the cars used now and the ams the same but with power handicap to slow them down a little. Not running in the same lobby, but the same time.

The only thing would be where the cut off would be

What you could do for something like that is to get all partaking drivers to do a speed test round a certain track in a certain car and give them ratings through their laptimes like you see in the Blancpain enduro series with Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze drivers.

Or, keep all exisiting championships as they are, they are afterall, TORA's main series, and should not be split. In the ISCC we have LMPC which caters for this need anyway.

I'm all for a new series with cars that are a little different to the norm (a spec series?) with a promotion/relegation system of divisions like with Football. Series would run over a shorter period of time to allow the promotion and relegation to happen more frequently.

I like this idea. You'd get a real sense of accomplishment if you got promoted into a league with drivers who you know are good also you would try to avoid relegating at all costs.

It does, but the fact that you are in s ''C'' or ''D'' lobby perhaps doesn't seem as prestigious to some drivers. I was pretty bummed out about being in B lobby last night. The competition was just so tough!

And when you have drivers that spend a lot more time on Forza testing and tuning (not a bad thing of course, some people enjoy taking it seriously), it's easy to get a bit fed up if you are more of a casual racer.

Last seasons TCC had more of a 'casual' atmosphere to it, and it was a lot of fun.

Good point above :

Car lists and restrictions of choice. I understand how restrictions came about, it's to stop every one from choosing the same car....now that was born out of historically unbalanced car lists.

Nowadays with a good balanced car list, people should be able to choose whatever car they wish, as if the list is well balanced, people by default will not naturally favour one car over another on mass.....I would even go so far as to say, with a very close well balanced car list, people will seek out the lesser used cars so as not to be in the crowd or to be see as copying rivals!!

I only mention this because even though this car choice / car restriction issue is not mentioned a lot, if at all, on the forums, I would say is the main complaint / issue raise / annoyance, I hear verbally levelled at TORA......

Thoughts

p.s. this also helps balance a car list, if people all start punting for one or two cars, it helps highlight potential issues with the balancing ;O)

I'm sorry Magictap, I don't get it. You compliment the carlist to the point where there isn't a dominent car so people will choose what they want, and then say its an issue?

Even with restrictions on the amounts of one car allowed to be used this does happen. Everyone still wants to use what the leading teams are using and complain because they can't get it, even although the majority of the cars are very similar.

One idea I would like to see come back is allowing teams to mix up their car choice within the teams, so that all 3 drivers don't have to use the same car and drivers can pick cars that suit their personal preference better, rather than having to race the car that their fastest member is good in.

huh? what?

the issue I hear is the restriction of choice on cars. e.g. Only two teams can have this car etc...

the good balancing of a list should go part way to stopping loads of the same choice, where as before, this didn't happen.

Does that make it clearer?

I understood what you meant magic, and I do agree on relaxing the restrictions a bit but not doing away with them completely. Some people, like yourself, enjoy the challenge of taking on an unknown and unpopular car and making the best of it where a lot of people will automatically jump ship to whatever the winning team is using.

Well something I have pondered on, for GT, is to double the amount of teams and privateers that can choose each car, but take out a number of cars from the car choices for next season.

what about a old style BTCC format were theres 'Race' Cars and 'Production' cars?

This could also work in the GTs like having a A class for slower guys and S class for the quick guys?

I understand its very hard to choose who goes in which class but im sure we'd get there.

I'd like to see a single make series like the Clio Cup (doesnt have to be a clio) where everyone uses the same car with the same build but where they can tune. We (BG) ran a tourney a few years back like it and it has proved to be the best that we've put together with close, competitive racing throughout the season. It works because no one gets an advantage with a car that is quicker than the others and the races look good on the replay with every team having their own paint job.

We did successfully have a short Fiat Abarth series towards the early days of forza 4 as well as a Mini series on Forza 3. Could be something to go into again, maybe a different car, we'll see.

Make a post here and see how much interest it gains! Wink
