Re: Trying to get into racing
ok...
a couple of questions before i try to help you out.... ok?
How old are you?
What state do you live in?
What kind of sponsors are you looking for?
How much are you willing to spend?
These are all questions you need to answer....then i can help you as much as you need.

Re: Trying to get into racing
you think it's late for me too start? How much do karts cost anyway? (at your level) And I don't think there are any karting places anywhere in my vicinity but I'll likely be going to skip barber racing school in a few years in Conn.

Re: Trying to get into racing
as silencer said.
We need your age
Might need your weight.
and how much you willing to spend.
Sponsors are hard to get i have been trying for the past year now and with all the history of my racing and being british champion and coming 12 in the world i have only got 2.
Karts can be VERY VERY exspecive going up to £3.500, i would conside ebay.
Just a little tip. There are loads of different engines out there. You would want a Rotax or Easykart. Easykart says it all. It is easy the engines last a long time. A Rotax engine can last ages! Before it need a new pistion ring. Were if you go to the engines i race in then my engines will only last 1 race before you need to re-build them and that for alot of money £350 each race (i think).
So i if you find anything on ebay then post the link in here and i will have a look into it and tell you if it is a buyer or not.

Re: Trying to get into racing
If your in the US, im sure there are loads of local Late Model series etc running on short ovals, similar to the EU based ELMS/CAMSO series which is very cheap for a season!
Then there is club racing, like the CTRC and Toyo Tyres Racing Series here in the UK that i have been looking into.

Re: Trying to get into racing
To help you here are some websites for karting.
http://www.ekartingnews.com(go to forums/Classifieds)

-Classes-
Try to get into the TaG(touch and go) Class as it is the most common class in the united states.
There are other classes most are expensive, some more than others.
i.e KF2, KF3, Rotax, Icc Shifters, Easykart, etc.
In USA, their are 4 types of TaG Classes. Masters(Runs a 125cc, 30+ Years), Heavy(Runs a 125cc, 15+ Years, 180+ lbs of person), Senior(Runs a 125cc, 15+ Years), Junior(Runs a 100cc, 10-15 Years)
My suggestion is you run TaG Senior, if the series or track runs the class(which they probably do).
-Engines-
If you are going to run in Tag Senior here are some engines you might want to look into(if your kart does not already have one)
Blue=Water Cooled
Green=Air cooled
Engine Name-Reliability-Price Range
IAME Easykart-VERY-$1,800-$2,000
ROK-Medium-$2,500-$3,500
ROK TT-Good-$3,500-$4,500
Parilla Leopard-VERY- $2,300-$2,500
PRD Fireball-Great-$1,600-$2,000
Sonik-Bad(no spare parts to be found)-$2,500-$3,000
-Chassis-
Their are some really great quality chassis to choose from.
Here is a top 5 list for you.
5.Maranello
4.Kosmic
3.Birel
2.Intrepid

My easykart engine gets up to 16,500 RPM....so technically our engines are faster than formula 1 engines! =)
Re: Trying to get into racing
how long have you been karting for? Idk if it's worth getting a kart for 3 years for 5k Oh and are TaG karts shifters?
sorry about the millions of questions, lol
I wish I could have gotten into this earlier, the only karts I've been on are at amusement parks and are painfully slow, I can have it floored the entire time...

I have been in karting for two years...yes it is worth it because you can go until you are 80+ years old....Tag karts are not shifters, shifters are KZ2, KZ1, ICC Shifters, Stock Honda Shifters, and, Easykart Shifters.
Its ok...i enjoy answering questions about karting.

Been doing it for ten years but had my lience for 8.
I have been in a KZ2 Very fast and fun but the TaG (Rotax) is the best chocie to go.

Thanks for the help. im looking around for a kart shop to buy myself a TaG cart. this is actually kinda better as i wont have to buy methanol every race

Re: Trying to get into racing
ya...but make sure you are running the right rim size and tire(Brigdestone YHC)
Re: Trying to get into racing
XTI Nightrider wrote:how do i figure that out?
go to the "Classes" part of the tracks website and it has tires and weight
Re: Trying to get into racing
oh ok cool. for sponsors, should i go about asking before or after i get the kart? i have no clue how long it will take for me to get the kind of cash i need on my own. my parents arent going to help at all. after i shell out at least 3,500 for the kart i then need like 1000 more for equipment right?
Re: Trying to get into racing
i found a website that does classifieds for full karts. often there are a few in my area. once i get the funds, that what im doing. ill probably get my saftey equipment used as well. (definatley the helmet at least)
Re: Trying to get into racing
Well...you need the following...as WKA runs the safety rulebook for all series in North america. Helmet(Snell Certified 05), Neck brace(their are several types), and gloves. If you want, you can get a kart racing suit(which i recommend getting)
Re: Trying to get into racing
yes i waqs going to go the whole nine yards and get the suit. what about sponsors though? i know people who have businesses and would sponsor me. should i ask for cash now to get the stuff, or wait it out until i have enough to buy my own?
Re: Trying to get into racing
well you should ask them, then expalin your problem with money right now and get a couple companies to chip in(if they would like to sponsor you)
If they do sponsor you make sure you advertise their companies on your kart.
Also what do you have to travel with(truck, truck and trailer, etc.)?

Re: Trying to get into racing
i know people with a truck and a trailer i could use so i would just do that. my local tracks only like 1 hour away so i doubt it would be a big deal
