Re: What's the last game you completed?

Post by CQR Aero on Sat 27 Feb 2010 - 16:32

I've completed the story/missions of many many games, and am happy to move onto other things, but I'm a total completionist (/achievement whore!), so I still like to go back and get the game totally totally complete at some point.

On 360 I've got 1000g/200g (XBL games) on about 5 or 6 titles now, and am hovering on completing several more, with just one or two achievements left to get, including FM3 which I only need the 100k drift point achievement for. I still can't seem to get that though! Sad

In terms of games in general, I have a wide ranging taste, but I'm an absolute sucker for a strong storyline, so something like Mass Effect is right up my street. God knows when March 9th comes, if I get FFXIII my life will become more reclusive than ever!

A game series that you may or may not have heard of but I can highly recommend (my personal all-time favourite) is the Legacy of Kain series, which was made by the same people as the Tomb Raider series (Crystal Dynamics). This is a series where the gameplay is very much in the same vein as the Tomb Raiders, but the setting is a gothic one, with various twists on the classic vampire themes.

The only way you can easily play the whole series is on PC, otherwise part 1 (Blood Omen, which is now very rare) was also on PS1 (one of the very earliest titles). Part 2 (Soul Reaver) was also available on PS1. What made this series so interesting for me, was that each instalment alternates between two main characters, so Blood Omen follows the lead protagonist Kain, whereas in Soul Reaver, you play as Kain's lieutenant, Raziel. Though Raziel is Kain's lieutenant, their stories are seperated by thousands of years, so if you play the series as a whole, you will be visiting familiar locations, but with thousands of years of change in civilization, architecture, and changes to the landscape, which to me, makes it so engrossing even on that level!! Soul Reaver was actually where I first came to the series, going back to play Blood Omen when I amazingly stumbled upon a second hand copy in a shop one day for a fiver (it sells for more like £50 on eBay these days).
The way the two characters' stories intertwine is truly awesome, and sucks me right in every time I play it. Some genuinely epic script writing.

The story doesn't end there though. Two further parts followed for xbox (Blood Omen 2) and ps2 (Soul Reaver 2), and then the final piece of the puzzle, Defiance, which was available on xbox, ps2 and PC, saw the two leads finally together in one game, finally reuniting at the games' climax.

If anyone is interested in trying these games out for PC, please drop me a PM, and I will give you some links to download them. I don't condone piracy, but when games are long out of print as these are, publishers tend not to mind so much!

Here's a taster - the opening cinematic to Soul Reaver. (Remember, this was on the PS1!).

Heavy Rain is the one and only game that makes me want a PS3. Farenheit was such an amazing game it can only be the killer app for the new console. And i hear ya with Legacy of Kain an Soul Reaver Chris!

Blood Omen was one of the first games I got for my PSX, and I played it to completion. I chose to save the world rather than damn it at the end. Got Soul Reaver for my Dreamcast still too, think I might fire it up again.

The easiest way I find to play PS1 games these days is on the PSP. I am playing Disruptor on it (anyone remember that!?) and am nearly finished it. Think I'll stick Blood Omen on it after that!

Yay! Glad I'm not alone in having played it. I highly recommend playing the whole series though, because the intricacies of the story as a whole are really really awesome. I had a read of the Wikipedia page on the series last night, and it brought back so many memories! No spoilers if you want to read it, and actually does a really good job of describing the series and the things that give it that X factor.

Thanks to a couple of key members of the dev team leaving Crystal Dynamics, the series seemed to be finished, but a very hush hush recruitment program has been going on on specialist games industry sites, which suggests CD are staffing up for something big, and it's not for their Tomb Raider team.....fingers crossed they're resurrecting the "Legacy of Kain: The Dark Chronicle" game which was canned a few years back, just before the launch of the latest generation consoles.

Nascar Thunder 2003 seemed to be the best Nascar game for me. Only one I played that had a sense of realism, and its for the Gamecube..

NR2003 was the game that formed the basis for iRacing, and when I had a wee shot of NR3 earlier, for a game that was 12 years old it had far superior physics to any console based NASCAR Game I have ever played.

i think the onyl good thing about it was the fact you could create your own liveries on your computer, load them to your EA Locker, then upload them into the game, on the car.

What sucked, was they used 'Generic' car models. No Chevy, Dodge, Ford, or Toyota..... EA Failed after Nascar 2005: Chase For the Cup, if you ask me. i had it for the PS2.

im just glad there is no NASCAR 10 when i looked at their lineup when MADDEN 10 came out
