First hand experience of disintegration at Mach 3..

Post by nickyf1 on Thu 6 Jan 2011 - 20:33

Amazing story told by USAF test pilot Bill Weaver, who flew Lockheed's SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft in the 60's, this story basically involves first hand experience of a very expensive plane breaking up at Mach 3 (thats three times the speed of sound, basically one kilometre every second) at an altitude of 78,000ft, basically the edge of space.

http://www.916-starfighter.de/SR-71_Waever.htm

I'm surprised the cockpits of these planes actually fit the huge balls these test pilots have..

yeah, they didnt have the modeling or anything like that.

it was basically. "well, let's see how it performs" and if some engineer made a mistake...

and can you imagine the pressure!? space race + cold war + big money contracts awarded to defense contractors...

Although with the UK defence strategy, its more a case of ''which vehicle are they secretly planning to retire''

Thanks for putting that up Nicky, I really enjoyed reading it. With the Blackbird and Concorde retired; two of those "greater than the sum of their parts" inanimate objects that somehow have a soul, we've really taken a step backwards rather than forwards haven't we?

I bet you, if Duncan worked at Area 51. Then no secret would be safe, but in return Duncan would be fed by the US Government to either a Alien Hybrid or the Draconians.

well supposedly, Area 51 was shut down about 5 years ago, the local people have stated that there are no more military air craft taking off, no more soldiers come inot town and people who go with in a certain radius of the base are met with very very light security, which used to be very very high security where shots would be fired (as warning shots) in you general vacinity if you walked onto the property.

They say it isn't run anymore, but people are still entering the base by airplanes. Along with jets still testing, with one test being with MIG's.

Along with that the runway is even bigger, then it use to be. However if they are doing super top secret testing, then it will most likely be underground.

But if it is above ground, then the goverment has shutter control on any private satellites. That is if the satellite is above.

Theres always plenty of interesting stuff operating out of Edwards AFB, like the X-37 that landed there a few months back Smile NASA's Dryden Flight Research Centre operates out of there.

Well, a British company seems to be interested in developing an aircraft that operates ''between Mach 2-4'' called LAPCAT A2 and an unmanned SSTO (Single Stage to Orbit) Spaceplane called SKYLON.

Meanwhile, an Isle of Man firm called Excalibur Almaz has got its hands on four reusable ex-Soviet TKS Space Capsules (an Apollo sized descent module with a Shuttle Mid-Deck sized Hab module stuck on) that have never been flown, plus two unflown Almaz Space Station modules...

Two American F-16's have landed at Glasgow Prestwick... I wonder what would happen if any secret aircraft had to make an emergency landing Razz
