Re: Spaceflight

Post by nickyf1 on Fri 29 Apr 2011 - 11:53

Hey, STS-134 launches tonight at 9pm, make sure to watch if you are even vaguely interested. If you have not seen a Shuttle launch before, please watch. Its like watching a really good race! The tension right up to T0 is just indescribable.

Don't celebrate the empirical nonsense on the BBC, celebrate humans in space! How the hell have we managed to put humans in space? When did we do that?!

Countdown is fine. If it were scrubbed, it would be for the safety of the crew, which is vital. There was a bush fire close to the pad the other day however.

Space Shuttle Enterprises actual prefix is OV-101 Smile OV stands for Orbital Vehicle, and the first 1 designates it as actual flight hardware. 0 was for ground test OV's. Endeavour is designated OV-099 as it was made from spare parts and based around a previous ground test article.

Did the launch get delayed? I'm going to be in class at the scheduled launch time and I'm not happy about it. If they can keep it on the ground for like 3 extra hours I will be eternally grateful to NASA.

Was Atlantis always scheduled to be the final launch? I thought at some point Endeavor was going to fly the last mission as its the newest shuttle? I really hope that one is set for dusk or dawn, sucks that I almost certainly won't be able to get over to FL to see it.

Also, I know they said where the 4 shuttles are going, but have they said which ones are going where?

Discovery - Smithsonian (DC)
Atlantis - Kennedy Space Centre (Merrit Island, FL)
Enterprise - Intrepid Air & Space (New York City, NY)
Endeavour - ?? (Los Angeles, CA) So near you... pretty much Smile

134 was indeed the final scheduled flight, although 135 was added to the launch manifest after Atlantis' fantastic performance on 132.

The 2nd of STS-134's Spacewalks have been completed. Only two further EVA's remain. These are the last two planned Spacewalks of the Space Shuttle Programme.

Today's Spacewalk lasted an ''epic'' 8 hours and 7 minutes, with a 50 minute break during.

I thought this video was fantastic, especially towards the end, it must have been shot when the majority of the crew was in bed. Its peacefulness reminds me of watching something out of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but the thing thats so amazing is that, THIS IS REAL! Very Happy

The crew that will finish off the Expedition 28 crew, and form the commanding crew of Expedition 29 launched today from Gagarin's Start at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Sergei Volkov (PKA), Mike Fossum (NASA) and Satoshi Furukawa (JAXA) make up the crew, with the resident Russian, Sergei, Commanding the Soyuz TMA-02M Spacecraft, with American Mike Fossum taking Command of the ISS on Expedition 29, when the current Expedition 28 crew leaves in the Autumn.

The last Expedition that will receive a Space Shuttle as a Visiting Vehicle and the first Expedition to fully utilise the fully assembled ISS.

One step closer to the Martian system!
