Its official, the Space Shuttle Programme will finish with the flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis on her, and the programmes final mission. STS-135 is targeted for launch on the 28th of June of this year at 3:48pm EST, it will carry Raffaello, a Logistics Module for the ISS and a system for investigating methods of robotically refuelling existing spacecraft on orbit.

The crew would be the smallest since STS-6, which launched on April 6th, 1983. This is because there will be no backup orbiter to rescue a large crew from the ISS, only Russian Soyuz vehicles would be available.

The Crew
Christopher Ferguson - CDR
Douglas Hurley - PLT
Sandra Magnus - MS1
Rex Walheim - MS2

The Mission patch has also been released:
Final Shuttle mission confirmed, STS-135 Sts13510

The full STS stack is representitive of the Shuttle Programmes insignia, the red ribbon from the NASA meatball represents the Shuttles importance to NASA over the course of its long service, the Omega letter represents the final flight of the Programme, and the fact that the orbiter has no visible name also signifies the end of the programme. Very fitting don't you think Smile

This better be live on the TV here, the Shuttle is far superior to any manned space flight system and the five Orbiters that were built have proved that a manned spacecraft can perform many types of useful missions, rather than just having one ''destination''. The Orbiters brought together nations; docking with Mir, which led to the International Space Station. It hosted the first flight of an Astronaut with a jetpack strapped to his back, it launched interplanetary probes, it launched Hubble, we now know so much more because of it. It was the first spacecraft to triumph in its own design, rather than its destination, and those five Orbiters, were used again, and again, and again. Their retirement has caused great controversy and unrest within NASA, nobody knows what do do without them! This isn't just the flight of Atlantis, its also the flight of Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Endeavour, the men and women who devoted their lives to the programme, as well as those who gave their lives to the programme.

Thats my emotional rant over Smile

Have you heard this news that tackles about space shuttle? Well, in the news they mentioned that after several setbacks due to weather, the Space Ship Atlantis launched Friday morning. It will be the final journey in the space shuttle program. The shuttle is the only winged manned spacecraft to achieve orbit and land, and the only reusable space vehicle that has ever made multiple flights into orbit. It was a difficult instant for many associated with the program. The end of the program will open the doorway for a new section in NASA's exploration of space. Here is the proof: Space Shuttle Atlantis lifts off on its final mission

Got it all covered in the ''spaceflight'' thread Wink And I am very hopeful for NASA's future plans. People seem to think its all ending? The USA will have several spacecraft to fly to LEO and one craft to go beyond in around ten years time!

And thanks a lot Chris i'll be watching that tonight!

I urge everyone else to have a sift through the spaceflight thread as I have posted a lot of really nice videos on there too Wink
