Neil Armstrong has passed away
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19381098
Neil Armstrong, former NASA Astronaut and US Naval Aviator, most notably the pilot of Gemini 8 in 1966 and the commander of Apollo 11 in 1969, has passed away today.
He was part of the first mission to dock two spacecraft in low Earth orbit, thus proving that orbital rendezvous was possible, thus proving that a flight to the Moon was within the realms of possibility. In the summer of 1969, he became the first of only twelve men to walk upon the surface of another world.
''One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind''
Rest in Peace Neil.

Re: Neil Armstrong has passed away
I'm quite surprised by this to tell the truth, the last i heard/seen of him he was fit and healthy on some NASA type documentary.
It's a shame really, and although i'm still convinced they didn't actually go to the moon, RIP. He'll never be forgotten, that's for sure.

Re: Neil Armstrong has passed away
He had recently had heart surgery, which can be very stressful for a man of that age.
As an engineer, I have no doubts in my mind that the Apollo Program did land astronauts on the Moon. They sent nine missions to the Moon, seven of those with the goal of landing, of which six successfully carried out. It is fact.
It is of course, only by coincidence that Neil Armstrong was the commander of the first lunar landing mission. The structure in which Apollo missions were undertaken meant that if any of the previous Apollo missions had failed to successfully complete their missions, the next crew in the flight rotation would have to give the same mission another go.
Apollo 11 could have easily been a lunar orbital mission like Apollo 10, and that may have resulted in either Pete Conrad or Jim Lovell being the first.
In many ways though, Neil was the ideal candidate for such a mission
For example, take Apollo 12 commander Pete Conrad's first words on the Moon:
Humourous, but not exactly worthy of a historic moment in human history.
And imagine if the first lunar landing mission was assigned to the doomed Apollo 13 spacecraft, which was faulty years before it ever launched.. The USA would have been reeling!
