Re: My Dunlop MK2 Golf GTi Build thread and race progress thread thing...
Awesome video!
Wheels are Wolfrace?
Can you switch to a strut top camber plate with spherical bearing?
If not I ran a series that required the use of the stock mounting position and I found a spherical that I could press in the VR6 strut rubber. Lasted multiple seasons.
i can see If I still have the part number.

Re: My Dunlop MK2 Golf GTi Build thread and race progress thread thing...
Hey guys! been ages since i posted up in here again!
So whats happend?
Well back in april I took part in the Dunlop VAG Trophy and Dunlop MK2 Golf GTi Championship at Silverstone on the full GP layout :Driven:
I did reasonably well and felt like I had started to make a little bit of progress. car did well apart from a buckled wheel giving me some serious vibration at higher speeds, and eventually turned a tyre into a pentagon which made things worse.
heres a few photos from silverstone
Heres some footage aswell,
Race 1 of the VAG Trophy in which a huge crash right infront of me happend seconds after the green light!
and heres race 2 of the MK2s
(Yes i nearly spun it on the warm up LOLL )
And heres the TV coverage
So although Silverstone went reasonably well it highlighted a few problems.
1. I wasnt commiting anywhere near enough. not pushing hard enough and braking way too early!
2. My suspension and setup needed work,
3. my tyres were shagged!

Re: My Dunlop MK2 Golf GTi Build thread and race progress thread thing...
So after Silverstone i took the car home and started working out what was wrong with the suspension and how it was set up.
Firstly, my setup was almost bang on, a few little tweaks saw me find a little bit more camber but the main problem was the amount of bolts that had worked loose ;O
So i broke out the 2ft power bar and started swinging off every bolt i could find, Even some of the cage bolts had worked loose!
I made a few tweaks to the Asthetics to the car aswell,
The car went down a storm at a local VW show aswell (CumbriaVAG) but I had my eyes on a bigger target, Cadwell park which was 1 week later!
All loaded up!
Cadwell Park is a track i had never even looked at or been to in my entire life and here me going there with the intention to "Push Harder" So the first thing i did was a Track walk, and wow was i amazed! Every kind of corner you can think of, Loads of gradient changes and its very very VERY narrow!
Anyway, Qualifying came and went pretty quickly, i tip toed round my outlap to get a feel for the car/track and get some heat in my tyres, 1st timed lap again just tip toed round but with a little more speed, It was clear straight away i liked this track!
My 2nd lap, to Quote "days of thunder" i dropped the hammer and started to push! The car felt awesome, it was sharp, responsive, turned when i asked it too and stuck to the track like glue! i remember seeing a few cars a good way ahead at the start of the lap, i rmember going through Gooseneck bend about halfway through the lap, the car went a little light as the weight went from side to side but the cars ahead were noticably closer. a few bends later I was coming into Mountain bend and i noticed waved yellows, and as I entered the bend i saw tom witts's car parked up in the grass with smoke billouging from his engine bay, not good! But nontheless i kept my foot in, this was going to be a quick lap for sure but then i saw the worst thing possible, a bloody red flag!
Session was restarted 10 mins later and i qualified 2nd last ( i was happy with that to be fair) with a 1.54.
Lights on I was on a mission! lol
So Race 1, i was feeling quietly confident, although i was on the back row I was determained to hang onto the pack this time!
The lights went out and i had a great start, closed straight up to the car infront but then had nowhere to go due to the tight nature of the track, and to make matters worse the car infront then lost drive so i had to get out the throttle which dropped me to stone cold last by the time i could get past. So i thought its now or never really and started to try to claw back the ground i had lost within 3 corners i had caught back up to the pack and had a really good exit which gave me a great run up the hill allowing me to line up 2 cars for a pass, but Petts saw me coming and denied my run by trying to pass Robinson at the same time, but this time i kept my foot in and was practically pushing Petts up the hill, but i had passed Robinson so i was back to my starting place! but this started a race long battle with Petts which was simply epic. I was pushing harder and harder but Petts kept responding and my laptimes tumbled from my Quali time of a 1.54 to a Pb of 1.49.7 which was only 0.5 off the fastest lap in class!
I finished the race 5th in class only 0.4 from Petts and 1 second from 3rd place! i was over the moon and a few of the drivers were shocked at my pace!
Race 2 i wanted to push for that podium, i was starting 12th this time and i knew where i needed to push harder to gain the time i was loosing. but as the race started i found myself going backwards again and I got a bit flustered by the tightness of the track and was concentrating too much on where other people were and not on my lines.
after the madness of the 1st lap calmed down i started to regain my composure and started to push to catch Tim Cox, again the car felt awesome and i found myself braking later and later, but i was starting to push too hard. I either had a few lockups and missed a few apexes or I was missing my gear when shifting down to 2nd but i was still gaining and managed to get myself onto Tims back bumper but it was too late as the chequered flag was dropped.
Although the result was good for myself in the fact i was welded onto the pack for the whole race, i was dissapointed at myself for the mess i made of the first lap and the lack of progress i made.
Donington is my next round in Septmeber and again, I take away from the track alot of stuff to learn, and some more changes/developments to make to the car. I wont settle for anything less than a podium this time!
Anyway, heres some of my favorite photos from the meeting

Awesome and I had no idea Cadwell was that narrow. Crazy!
Re: My Dunlop MK2 Golf GTi Build thread and race progress thread thing...
Great showing Rusty!. You had fun. You guys are so lucky with so many/and variety of tracks over there.
After all your work put in, it's great to see your weekend's ending with a big smile on your face and some nice shots to go along with it.
Up to the nxt one then. Good luck!
