A question for the Brits...

Before I ask the question, I will tell you a little story about my grandfather (it's relevent).

My grandfather was a Czech native and he escaped to England almost immediately after WWII ended as a refugee where he worked there for the required time to gain a British passport (which granted him access to any commonwealth nation). He then moved to Canada, and started a family with my grandmother (Canadian).

He collected many coins in his stay and kept them in a collection where it was then passed to my dad when he passed away. It now belongs to me, as of a few years ago.

looking thru them again, I'm trying to understand if they are rare or not, so here is part one: What is a Penny? (ca. 1911-1938ish), what is a half penny? (ca. 1964) and what is a half crown (ca. 1950). I have 4 pennies (oldest being 1911), one half penny and one half crown.

amoungst my own collection I have a 6 pence coin from 1930's (which I assume was common).

I know you guys changed your monetary system some years ago from using shillings and etc etc to a base 10 system, which is why I haven't the slightest clue what these could be. I have a few ideas but I want to hear from you guys. I could ask Mr. Google, but this is probably more fun.

If you want pics, just say the word. I could post some of my other coins I have too. (LOTS of Czech coins, even an old bill! I also have Hungarian (wink wink FRH) Pengoe and Forint from ye old days).

A penny would be the lowest value coin "One Pence", a half-penny...

I remember looking at the Pennies and in the guessable condition that the oldest one is, I could probably fetch $20 for it.

The ones you really want to look out for are sovereigns. I have a few of those. Well, my wife does. Worth about £350-400 each!

I looked it up on a couple of sites, and I was sorta right. I could probably get $15-20 for my One pennies, probably nothing for my half penny and deffinitely nothing for my half crown.

My half crown was off by a couple of years from being silver, which is worth a pretty penny.

I DO have about a dozen Canadian Silver Dollars.

I have some old Swedish currency (not sure if still relevant), some old Slovak currency, some old German Marks and even an old Third Reich coin.

The Reichmarks could be interesting. As far as I know they're either a home run or a swing-and-a-miss. They were so mass-produced in WWI to the point that they're virtually worthless, but I forget about WWII.

The coins, however, are more interesting. I know that the Germans were overbearing with their paper currency. I don't think that a coin could deflate as substantially as the paper did, as a coin is made out of X amount of metal worth Y value -- Something that should always hold what its worth, especially if its made out of a precious metal.

Anything European and old-looking from before WWII should be worth looking at. Since they've all abandoned their old currencies (and since it seems like a lot of them kept changing it with each regime) anything older should have SOME value.

I have some czech coins from before WWII, although anything else before the war is the British One Pennies (which apparently weren't worth anything but are twice the size of our loonie ($1)

The Hungarian Pengoe I have are interesting tho, as that has the record for highest inflation rate in history, but the coins might be still worth somthing, if not, then it's a nice party peice.

To be honest I do not think the coins are worth that much. I have hundreds of pennies, halfpennies etc. and really the metal is the most valuable thing about them.

My advice, keep them and they will go up in price eventually.
