Wheel Issues (AKA: Curse you, Microsoft) Empty Wheel Issues (AKA: Curse you, Microsoft)

Post by Standaman94 Sat 1 Sep 2012 - 16:31

Ah yes, the MS Wireless Racing Wheel. What a load of turd.

If you have one, you know it's a pile of horse garbage anyway. It squeaks, it doesn't mount well, it loses connection (and does it rather dramatically) and more recently, the force feedback has gone astray from the latest Dashboard update.

If other words: Don't buy it if you have other options.

The particular issue with mine today is that the right paddle shifter has broken a little. It'll only shift up if I grab the whole thing and yank it towards me. I've prodded around with it and seen some photos of the thing dismantled, and I have identified the fault - I tiny little metal rod has came a bit loose, so when I pull the shifter normally it doesn't register the shift. Only when I pull real hard it'll pick up the shift. I'll get it fixed soon (hopefully... MS generally don't like you prodding around inside their products)

Henceforth, this thread shall now be the MSWRW hate thread.

Wheel Issues (AKA: Curse you, Microsoft) Empty Re: Wheel Issues (AKA: Curse you, Microsoft)

Post by nickyf1 Sat 1 Sep 2012 - 20:27

I've had one for almost four years now.

It did used to squeak.. I put WD40 on it. It's done the trick for a good year and a bit now. Mines mounts very well. Must be your table. Mines has never lost connection. The Force Feedback has never been lost.

It has however reset itself to the left as it's rest point (making driving awkward) and it's A and B buttons have ceased to work. But those things sort of... fixed themselves.

Oh, and it often electrocutes me! Which isn't too nice. But a good reboot of it makes that go away.

It's been a faithful companion for years, and as I really don't have money to buy a good wheel, it's the best way I have to play racing games. I can't bring myself to use a pad anymore.

And after all the issues it's had, it's still working to this day! It's a miracle! I'm enjoying it as much as I can before it finally kicks the bucket. And after that.. I probably won't go near the xbox as much as I do now. It's got character, that's for sure!

Mine electrocutes me, too.

Yeah mine veers off the the left or right a lot of the time, so I have to reset it to stop it doing it. But more annoyingly it'll glitch and weird stuff will happen... Like the telemetry will pop up and it'll change down a gear and break my engine. No idea why it does that.

I have just sold mine to my friend after many faithfull years, up until I used the Fanatec the microsoft was the only wheel I had ever been able to match the lap times I could manage with a pad. Just be grateful you dont have one of the Madcatz official wheels that they brought out to replace the Microsoft one its twice as much and could vibrate any fillings loose while you are driving it. One of my team members has had 2 in the last 6 months and both have done exactly the same thing.

I have 2 of the Microsoft wheels that I had bought off of Craigslist for$40 each. Niether one works now. Shifter paddles broken. Someday I need to get off my arss and put one together. Went to bestbuy together a replacement and bought a MadCatz for $169 thinking it had force feedback. Nope and it sucks! The B button won't work unless you turn the wheel full left. On long races it just quits, even though I put in fresh batteries. The idea of spending $400-$500 for a Fanatec is out of the question. Have the money but also have a spouse! Wish I could find replacement paddles.....

I have found the cause of my problem.

Apparently only epoxy adhesive will make it fix stronger than it was before. Question is, do I have some....

Same problem have.... I can tell you super glue doesn't do crap. I'm gonna try epoxy to but I think I'll try adding in a piece of wire under the epoxy for added strength. Wish someone would make a replacement paddle......... Wonder if one from that Madcatz would work?

Well all you need is something to push the button inside the wheel. If a Madcatz paddle fits, then that should be fine. I've read that some people are making their own paddles that are stronger.

Anything to hold the little connector things will make it stronger.. Plastic glued to it, or I read that a paperclip stuck between the two would do the trick. I might try that but if it breaks it's going to be rattling around inside there until I can be bothered to get it out again.

I agree with most of the points above. I haven't heard of a new dashboard update, but I did have to reset mine in the middle of Qualifying in ISCC today.

I've been told to think of the following things as something else:

Wheel Glitch (crash): Mechanical Failure
No Force Feedback: Power Steering Failure

In some ways it is kind of realistic...

I'm thinking that they might eventually cease to work, and they'll make us buy that $250 one. Mad

Bought a MS wheel: Bought the cheap brand racing equipment.

Update on my adventures:
The Expoxy didn't hold when I tried to put it back it. So plan B is to put it in place in the wheel, glue it in the wheel, wait to dry then put it all together again (and wait for it to break again)

Wheel Issues (AKA: Curse you, Microsoft) Empty Re: Wheel Issues (AKA: Curse you, Microsoft)

Post by Richy59 Wed 5 Sep 2012 - 6:59

My old MS wheels basically disintegrated on the inside, where the steering column is attached to the housing. I ended up turning the wheels round and round and it ripped all the electronics out, which were far too small for me to solder. Suffice to say, it went in the bin.

I bought an overly priced one as a replacement as we needed one to go down to London with last year, and then I bought my Fanatec.

I have only recently been having issues with my Fanatec that people were talking about over the last few months. It just doesn't feel 'right' when I start a race and I tend to have to reset it. I'm worried about Britcar as it will only be going active for the first time as I start a stint.

Update!

The epoxy I was using is actually pretty terrible at holding things together. So I managed to:
1- Take the whole wheel off.
2- By some other weird glue stuff
3- Pull all the epoxy off that was already glued on there
4- Get this new glue all over myself and the wheel
5- Weird smoke starts coming from the glue
6- Get high

This new glue is called Cyanoacrylate. It has a weird applier that resembles a Sharpie that you run against both ends, then you douse one end with the glue and shove them together. Too much glue and smoke comes out. Fun! silent :cyclops: Embarassed Shocked bounce bounce confused geek queen albino albino cheers Poop

Glue has welded itself shut. Too much excess glue now on the broken parts to make an accurate and strong bond. Now looking to buy spare parts instead (or a dead cheap 2nd hand wheel)

Project might have to be abandoned.

(I've put an ad on Craigslist. Hopefully some pedo will send me a part)
