Re: Le Mans News
You don't find it telling that the only manufacturer effort besides Audi and Peugeot is Aston Martin. There's no Ford, GM, Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, or Mazda, and Honda is a factory effort in name only. Why would they waste the money to run an LMP program when they cannot win.
I don't think its the lack of funding in the petrol teams, its that for nearly the past decade the regulations have created a separate and faster diesel P1 class. Seeing as none of those manufacturers that I listed use diesel heavily in their road cars, they are obviously not going to run a diesel race team. How many years has Pescarolo spent trailing Audis around Le Mans? The same for Aston Martin. And sadly now, the car that was most likely to prove me wrong won't be racing.
I'll grant you that if McLaren or Ferrari showed up with their F1 budget and F1 resources that they would have no trouble wiping the floor with Audi and Peugeot, but that's just not how sports car racing works. That kind of money just isn't realistic, and it shouldn't be required in order to beat diesels.
Its to the point now where it isn't about new technology either. A turbo diesel has won every race since the R10 showed up. Its just more of the same every year. The tech is there, the ACO just isn't letting onto the grid. Look at the most recent road cars: AWD, small twin turbo engines, KERS, active aero...

Re: Le Mans News
Fantastic video.
Often you hear people say ''Motorsport isn't really a Sport'' because they don't realise how fit you have to be to drive at the top level. This pretty much explains why they are wrong.

They showed the whole video during the champions league ad break on STV. Not sure if English viewers had it on ITV.

Re: Le Mans News
Can someone explain how Audi ran their R8 cars? I didn't start watching Le Mans until the R10 was around, so I don't really understand this. With the R18, Audi only runs factory cars. They shelved the R15, R15+, and R15++ instead of letting a satellite team run a few of them. When Audi ran the factory R15s, they let Kolles run two of the R10s, but when Audi ran the R10s themselves, there were no satellite R8s. But, as far as I can tell, most of the R8s that competed were not factory teams were they?
I can't figure that out. Peugeot runs a satellite car through Oreca and previously Pescarolo, and that fourth entry has arguably been fairly useful for them. So why doesn't Audi farm out their old cars?

Re: Le Mans News
2000-2002 I believe were factory run R8's (In 2003, a lot of Audi tech, and possibly Audi team, raced the Bentley). They then pulled out as a manufacturer to focus on the R10, and handed over the running to private teams (Team Goh, Velox Racing, Champion Racing, Oreca).
At the time, the main opposition to the Audi's were the Pescarolo's, which at the time, were very quick and very up to date.
In 2006, they ran the R8 for the first part of the ALMS season, and debuted the R10 at that years Le Mans 24 Hours. And so began the era of the Diesel!

Thats the Team Goh car. Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello and Seiji Ara drove that car to victory in 2004.

Re: Le Mans News
Ok, that makes sense, but why did all of those teams disappear in 2006 when the R10 came out? I'm not getting the point of them just boxing up all of the previous years' cars. It doesn't really seem like it would have cost Audi anything to have given their R15s to a customer team this year. They were already updated and race ready because Audi ran them themselves at Sebring, and had 2 or 3 of them had been running, Audi wouldn't have found themselves with only 1 car left half way into the race.

Re: Le Mans News
Based on the performance at Sebring, the R15++ was second only to the new 908 and maybe the HPD in terms of pure pace. It was faster than the Oak Pescarolos and the Rebellion Lolas, which would have put it near the top 5 at Le Mans.

maybe they've already been earmarked for museums or collections.
maybe they dont want to get beat by a customer team like oreca did @ sebring
maybe audi looked at the numbers and decided it wasnt worth it.
Kolles ran the R10's...so it's not like they "boxed them all up"

Re: Le Mans News
I know, the Kolles Audis are what is confusing me. They weren't afraid of being beaten by a customer team then, so why not field some customer R15s as insurance? They had to know the R18 wouldn't lose to the R15 on pace, so they would only have to their customer team if they screwed up.

Re: Le Mans News
on audisports facebook page, there's a poll question about the R18's and customer teams using them.
