Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
At a special conference just before E3 2013, Microsoft unveiled their next gen console, the Xbox One. Much was made of its television and social capabilities and Kinect 2.0 was explained. Games were on the back burner, but Microsoft promised that E3 would be all about the games. Finally, the information everyone wanted to hear was the release date and Microsoft sort of complied with a window of November 2013. The bar was set for the next gen race. With Sony going second, Microsoft had a distinct advantage of being the one’s to really show off next gen technology to the public for the first time.
At E3, Microsoft delivered on the promise of games but still seemed rather elusive with that release date. But that was okay. Gamescom was coming up and everyone assumed that that was the time when all would be revealed. Gamescom 2013 arrived and Sony announced that the PS4 would launch 15th Nov in the US and 29th Nov in Europe and AU. But from Microsoft? Still a vague November.
Since then, all has been quiet and it seems that gamers have been kept in the dark about when they can finally get their hands on the new Xbox. This is puzzling. With two months to go, it is rather unbelievable that we don’t have anything concrete. Sony’s official announcement has allowed them to pull forward in pre-order sales and get a substantial lead. There is no real reason why Microsoft should be holding back this information, particularly as potential consumers simply need to know.
Analysts first pegged the 5th Nov as a likely release date for the Xbox One. I think everyone expected Microsoft to want to sneak in in front of Sony, as well as the raft of big video game releases in November. If people buy Xbox 360 versions of Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed 4 and others, why would they need an Xbox One straight away? The latest unofficial news makes a late November release for the new Xbox likely, information coming from a contest to win one.
So what does the lack of a release date tell us, if anything? Are there issues at Camp Microsoft? Or is there a big reveal planned? I am not totally sure, but with each passing day, when I wake up in the morning and check the gaming news of the night before, I’d be less shocked to hear that the Xbox One had been delayed than get an actual date.

Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
if it's worth anything, my XBox One pre-order on Amazon has a 'Release Date Delivery' set as November 27th, At The Moment. dunno if or when that'd change.

With GTA V being released Sept. 17, I probably will not be getting a XBox One till 2014.

Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
Still slightly ridiculous. We're less than 3 months away from launch and we still don't have a clear cut launch date? Why are Microsoft holding back? We just simply need to know. Nothing to be gained from keeping tight lipped, just angering customers.

Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
So, because of Europe's terrible internet speeds (on average) Playstation won't be brining it's game streaming service to Europe until after the 2014 US launch. Our main internet service (ADSL) is pretty terrible, but Fibre is slowly being rolled out. I wonder what this will mean for the XB1's connected services.

That'd make e man's style driver changes rather interesting lol.
Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
Xbox One release date to be announced at 2pm.
Xbox One is now in full production, and the CPU speed has been boosted to 1.75GHz (was 1.6GHz), along with the recently announced GPU boost from 800Mhz to 853Mhz. Interestingly, the Xbox One now has more CPU power than PS4 (PS4 is 1.6GHz) and more available memory (5GB vs 4.5GB for PS4), but PS4 has more graphical (GPU) power. Will be interesting to see how developers use the different capabilities of the machine - the extra CPU power on Xbox One could be especially handy for multiplayer.

So, erm, what does that all mean?CQR MAGiC wrote:Interestingly, the Xbox One now has more CPU power than PS4 (PS4 is 1.6GHz) and more available memory (5GB vs 4.5GB for PS4), but PS4 has more graphical (GPU) power.
Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
Xbox One has slightly more 'calculation power' (10% faster) - so that's good for physics, multiplayer calculations etc.
Xbox One has slightly more 'available memory' (0.5GB extra) - developers can use this to add more detail, bigger worlds, more players.
PS4 has a fairly decent advantage in GPU power (about 30% faster) - GPU power is needed to draw everything on screen, HD graphics at 60 frames per second needs a lot of GPU processing power.
(Xbox One has a technical trick up its sleeve though with an extra 32MB high-speed 'ESDRAM' buffer - I won't go into the technical details cos it makes my brain hurt lol It remains to be seen whether this will make up for the raw GPU defecit - my gut feeling is it will, the 360 uses a similar trick and it's allowed the technically inferior 360 to keep up with the PS3 for the last 8 years.)
In terms of multi-platform games (FIFA, Battlefield etc), I doubt they're will be any tangible difference between PS4 or Xbox One.
It's first party games where the differences may show - Sony exclusive games could look better (because they can use that extra GPU power), whereas Microsoft exclusive games could use their additional CPU and memory to create bigger worlds, better physics, better features. And that's not considering the 'Cloud power' that Xbox One can use too.

Ahhh
So now I know that my laptop has great GPU but poor CPU (eg poor render distance but everything looks nice )

Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
Yeah, it's possibly a dual-core laptop, a lot of demanding PC games work best on quad-core (or better) processors. These new consoles have 8-core processors, 6 of which are dedicated just to gaming (2 are reserved for all the background and system stuff, apps etc).

Re: Miscellaneous Next-Gen Gaming thread
Press Windows Key + Pause/Break to open System Properties - and look under processor, e.g. mine's a Pentium Dual-Core CPU T4300 2.1GHz
