The 8 year old Motorsport Aficionado

Post by nickyf1 on Fri Jun 11, 2010 6:11 pm

Ok, that photo on the MWM Listeners Collective got me going all nostalgic about playing with toy cars, and its all coming flooding back to me! I ran various amounts of Series and an ''annual'' 24 Hour race at Laguna Seca.... From what I can remember... But it got me thinking, the championships I imagined up are abseloutely AMAZING. The more I thought about it, the more I loved my childish ideas.. So here is a run down of what I ran. Feel free to post your own!

This was around 1999/2000 so F1 drivers from that era are featured. Also featured are some touring car and rallycross names from my favourite Murray Walker video Razz Also lots of names from PS1 games Razz

WTCC (this was before the actual WTCC was formed and was inspired by the ETCC/FIA GT on Eurosport)
Team BMW [M3 E36 DTM] - Jenson Button (Warsteiner) - Ralf Schumacher (Tic Tac) - Jorg Muller (Jagermeister)
Ford Racing [Ford Escort Cosworth] - Colin McRae (Martini) - Martin Schanche (Michelin)
Lanica Racing [Lancia Delta S4] - Gabrielle Tarquini (Martini) - ??????? (Martini)
Mercedes [EVO DTM] - Mika Hakkinen (Monroe)
Peugeot [406 EVO] - Steve Soper (Peugeot Works) - ??????? (Peugeot Works)

Generally BMW and Lancia were the two main teams. Peugeot occasionally got up there, and the real turning point in the season was Ralf Schumacher breaking BOTH his legs in a horrible crash at Knockhill. The eventual champion was Tarquini IIRC as Schumacher was out for over half the season.

Tracks were Monaco, Long Beach, Laguna Seca, Monza, Knockhill, and plenty more im sure Razz

Laguna Seca 24 Hours
All I know about this was that there were two LMP entries, and a Camaro won.. I had a dimmer light, so I could replicate dusk, night and dawn... it was awsome!

Oh! And the Daytona 500! I used all my little NASCAR's on my rug which had rolled up edges to make banked corners... awsome!

i once had a HUGE 24/36-count car carrying case, filled to the gills with NASCAR matchbox/hot wheel sized cars. i never actually did a 24hr like you apparently did, but i spent alot of time, making up my own tracks with crayons (to line out the outside wall, infield, and pit lane). i had fun for a 9 yr old, or at least what i thought was fun.
