The only reason I'd ever wish to live in the State of New York. Lived there a bit when I was younger, about 4 miles from the track, but it was closed that year.

Watkins Glen race may be overshadowed by tragedy. Seems that there was a terrible incident involving Tony Stewart at a Sprint Car race Saturday night. Tony is fine, the other guy is not. Police investigating. This should be all over the news in the morning, after official statements have been made.

guys this is where I am from....born and raised right now the buzz is they are trying to lynch tony ....
back story last year he got into a wreak same track with an up-and-coming female sprintcar driver seriously injuring ,hospitalizing her for months , ill post the vidieo in a min but take note of the back end of his car .due to the offset stagger or a sprintcar the back end swings right when you step on the gas his CLEARLY does not!!!
rule 1 of dirt track racing is you DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR  
though this is a horrible tragedy it is not a criminal act

It is a tragedy indeed, and you are right, you shouldn't get out of your car, nor approach a driver who is still going at the 40MPH caution speed (ish)

I hate how a lot of people are instantaneously blaming Tony, the guy must feel awful

I am shocked to wake up and see my news feed blown up by this story.... I have been a huge Tony Stewart fan since the beginning,  since he drove a white car and why on tora and vm my car number is either 14 or has 14 in it. The main issue that I keep reading is there saying he didn't lift and internationally killed this guy. Stating that the nascar drivers do it all the time, jumping out of there cars and running on to the track to confront the guy who wrecked them and there avoided being hit.
The problem is one is on dirt the other is on asphalt. The grip level at any speed is different on dirt as it is on asphalt.  For instance drive down your local dirt, gravel, or clay road and at 40 mph,  yank the steering wheel as hard as you can to either the left or right and tell me what happens. Then do the same on asphalt.
Drivers are told DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR. You or your car can still be struck. Wait for safety crews arrive and safety get you out of the car. Ward jumps out of his car and walked around the track to confront Stewart. Unfortunately walks into the path of Stewarts car.
I am saddened about what happened and it is a difficult time when this happens in the racing world. I feel for Wards family and I hope after this crazy s*** storm passes, I hope this doesn't end tonys career and people realize this was and accident and not murder.

The act of getting out of your car to show displeasure may be what has cost this kid his life, but is nothing new. Happens all the time, in most series, on both asphalt and dirt.

I think part of it is that to a driver, it looks cool. It makes the headlines and highlight reels all the time. The act has been glorified into how you should handle being wronged.

That being said, it should not happen. Stay in your car until instructed by officials or safety personnel. Sit on your emotions, and if they are still sky high at the completion of the event, then go vent your frustrations to whoever you are upset with.

On occasions where I have been sidelined midrace I've always done the same thing. Get out and get away from the track as quickly as possible. There is no excuse for doing what this lad did, and unfortunately he has paid the ultimate price for his stupidity.

On a more positive note: NASCAR a the Glen is on track about ready to go green!

If yesterday's Nationwide race is any indication, this should be a good one!

So sad, yet so stupid.

There was a similar incident in a rallycross event a few years ago. The driver didn't get hit but it caused a few collisions between the cars avoiding him. There's a video on Youtube somewhere.

Most of Watkins Glen seems to be like that though for track limits. Running wide at Turn 1 just gives you a little more speed into the corner but it actually loses time in most cases. Same with after the carousel.
