Awesome stuff Standaman! I'm enjoying reading through the thread.

Some news from Kepler!
http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2013/01/nasa-kepler-closing-in-earths-analogue/
The continuing success of NASA’s Kepler mission was highlighted on Monday, following the discovery of 461 new planet candidates – four of which are less than twice the size of Earth and orbit in their sun’s habitable zone. Scientists believe it’s just a matter of “when” a twin of our own planet is found by the spacecraft.

Quite interesting, Quantum physics is really cool and weird at the same time, keeps breaking rules of physics have been around for ages.

Re: SCIENCE thread!
I've got quantum physics as part of my physics a2 course this year.
But first I have an exam on Electromagnetism, electric fields, further mechanics stuff and particle physics. Yay.

Re: SCIENCE thread!
I have mine on Friday
Baryons, Mesons, Leptons etc.
Still don't understand Photoelectricity, but oh well, was never taught it so that's my excuse /
Whole bit on electricity too, not happy bout that part

Re: SCIENCE thread!
Advanced Higher Physics (Scottish a2) was really cool. I was best at mechanics (same story in uni).
Currently doing electronics, Maths and mechanics. It all blows my advanced highers out of the water!

Re: SCIENCE thread!
It's a shame we don't do anything about air flow, aerodynamics & all that jazz. It'll be more useful than the photoelectric effect.

Re: SCIENCE thread!
Because I definitely need to know that Fmin= work function/plancks ... not.
I want to actually do Automotive engineering at uni, and none of this stuff is even vaguely related, yet I need an A to go to the uni I want to go to..

I did fluid mechanics in first year. It was really tough stuff, got a C for my exam, and many failed. It didn't help that the lecturer was terrible though. I fared much better in solid mechanics (dynamics and statics), maths and materials. Also did more Thermodynamics and computer programming this year.
My course is split between University and the Glasgow School of Art, so at Art School we learn about design, manufacture and practical applications of what we learn at uni. Right now we're doing a project to see who can build a wind turbine with the most power output. We've got a mini wind tunnel and everything. I much prefer the hands on stuff to the theory, definitely. I was a bit sceptical about going to Art School in the beginning, but it's the best thing that's happened to me.
It's a real weird mix of tutors from different backgrounds, from the pure engineers, to the industrial designers (my tutor appeared on Top Gear, the one where they presented cars to a panel of judges. He was the Scottish one) to the pure artists. It's a joy to see the fusion of design, science and engineering.
Bandicoot - I'd totally recommend Product Design Engineering as a choice. Mechanical and Aeronautical sound cool at first, but when it gets to the nitty gritty (for me at least), I'd much rather be doing something a bit more diverse, a bit more unique, rather than pigeon fencing myself into Mech or Aero.
But that's just me!

The university I go to, has an excellent Automotive Engineering program. We have a huge facility on campus including North America's largest wind tunnel.
When I got in, the min grade was a 70. I'm not sure what it is now tho.

Ah yeah, photoelectricity isn't too bad, like light shining on a metal and the release of electrons?(probably the most basic explanation )
Hate the electricity bit as well, lots of equations and circuits, boring stuff!

Re: SCIENCE thread!
I'm just not confident with using the formulas for it. Teacher was ill, never been taught it.
And agreed, Circuits are super boring, and things like resistance in a parallel circuit always get me.
