Foreign Speaking Drivers?
Hello my fellow marshalls! I have a query!
This evening, I hosted the test night for the GoDaddy Fun Cup and we had some minor issues. Well, major issues.
Several times during the evening, Cautions or instructions were given, but were not understood by some drivers who didn't understand the language.
For example, a Caution was called and several drivers didn't understand and powered past, who only realized the mistake a few minutes later. And a time was given for the restart and those drivers didn't go.
I was wondering how we are supposed to deal with drivers who do not understand the language of the hosts.
I'm not having a go at those who don't speak English, I know it isn't their fault, but how do we deal with it?

Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
If they don't speak English then it's not our fault if we don't speak theirs. The forums are English, so surely they'd have to know something...
Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
Thats what I was thinking, It's not their fault either, but it kind of ruined the evening's racing when we had to constantly sort out problems

Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
Interesting question you have there Jordan.
In the Friday Night Series, we have had lots of foreign language racers. Some speak Spanish, others Portuguese, yet it was only once an issue that couldn't be resolved as usually I have been fortunate to have someone in the lobby who is bilingual to translate any commands.

Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
See we had someone bilingual also, but we can't really appoint language experts for lobbies with foreign drivers in can we? That'd be a new Staff group...
I'm not trying to isolate foreign speaking drivers but, something needs to be worked out

Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
In the Miatas, we had three to five Brazilians, two of which are fluent in English, so they would relay info. In Mustangs we have had up to five Spanish speaking drivers, and I am lucky enough to have DTech around to translate for me.
Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
Just post a thread asking for volunteers who are willing to translate. Then just list everyone and what languages they speak. Then sticky the thread so everyone can check it before an event incase someone has a foreign speaking driver.

Also, Hurricane, that's a brilliant idea, we should do that at some point

Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
Problem is, its bad enough sometimes finding a host for a lobby let alone a translator to get in the same lobby.
All drivers should be tested in the lobby before the race and be able to understand the host, if not then sorry they should not allowed to race

Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
One of the participants tonight, an Italian driver called DinoSilenzi just posted this:
That's not a bad idea, how about we run a session teaching some drivers about different race calls?
And I completely agree Chucky!
About race calls: what do you think about practical lessons?

Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
Not only foreign drivers but also some English speaking drivers have no clue either!
Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
No kidding Blizz. I have seen, in a single race lobby, British, Northern American (NY/Jersey), Southern American (Georgia/Texas), Aussies, Scottish, Canadian and US West Coast... MANY different versions of the English language. Throw in some audio lag break-up, and we may as well be speaking Mandarin, Greek and Arabic, as well as some of that African tribesman clicking stuff.
Re: Foreign Speaking Drivers?
Ah Scottish rocks, the chicks love it!
On a more serious note, why dont we learn words like, Stop,Restart etc in a different language so its a little easyer on both sides?
