Estoril Race Photos
Quifel-ASM Team launched its 2009 campaign at the Circuito do Estoril in Portugal this afternoon. The Portuguese squad presented their Ginetta-Zytek 09S in its new livery as the team was in action during the Dunlop Test days.
António Simões confirmed the driver line-up for the 2009 Le Mans Series will be the same as last year, with Miguel Pais do Amaral and Olivier Pla sharing the Zytek throughout the season. The team has also applied for an entry for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Guy Smith will join the team at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
Our colleagues of Estoril Race Photos talked with Olivier Pla at the track and the Frenchman was full of praise when asked about the car. The Frenchman told Estoril Race Photos that he was half a second faster than the Porsche RS Spyder last year, with all the 2009 specification already on the car. Pla also confirmed that the car is easier to drive than the Lola and that Amaral was already 1 second per lap quicker than he was in the Lola.
Quifel-ASM Team also confirmed its presence at the Paul Ricard HTTT Le Mans Series Test Days where they will have the first real chance to compare themselves with the other LMP2 team.

Le Mans 24 Hours: 82 entries for 55 places!
By Series Update ⋅ January 29, 2009 ⋅ E-mail this post ⋅ Print this post ⋅ Post a comment
The Le Mans 24-Hours event is in rude good health and doesn’t mind admitting it! The ACO has received 82 entry requests for the 2009 race. Despite the quality of all these candidatures only 55 cars will line up on the starting grid.
For the ACO this figure is cause for joy, and it is also a reward for the club, which has fought hard against all odds to impose its technical choices, so that the greatest endurance race in the world remains faithful to the Le Mans spirit. 82 entry forms have been sent to the ACO!
This is a remarkable number that has swept away the fears that hang over motor racing due to the current economic crisis. Once again, the Le Mans passion is stronger than ever, and the host of competitors wanting to have their names associated with the myth is living proof of this.
82 entries, it’s almost the same as in 2008 (88 requests) and better than 2007 (76)!
The most remarkable fact is that these 82 requests are all of an exceptionally high level in terms of quality and variety. They could all start the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours were it not for the fact that the regulations limit the number to 55.
And it has to be stressed that the top prototype categories, LM P1 and LM P2, represent more than 50% of the entries with a total of 44 cars!
In addition to the 15 entrants that confirmed their automatic invitations at the start of January, the remainder will be selected from among 67 cars. Without letting the cat out of the bag it must be said that the 2009 field is a very international one with competitors representing 17 different nationalities in addition to 20 cars entered by French teams.
As for the clash of the Titans, it will take place between Audi and Peugeot in LM P1 with the Oreca-Courage and Pescarolo petrol-engined LM P1s waiting to pounce on any mistakes by the diesel-powered cars. They will be backed up by the new prototype Aston Martins, whose entry has come out of the blue as the famous British company is determined to shine at Le Mans, and celebrate its one and only outright victory in 1959.
The ACO Selection Committee, as it does each year, will get down to work so that the beauty of the sport, the level playing field in the race, faithfulness and determination among other qualities are rewarded by an invitation to practice for the Le Mans 24 Hours on 10th and 11th June.
From a regulations point of view 55 cars will be selected (plus 8 reserves until 21st May).
This list, worthy of the halcyon days of Le Mans, will be announced at a press conference in Paris at the end of February.
Not long to go now!

Re: Le Mans News
the first pictures of the Audi R15 TDI in action at the Italian Vallelunga circuit popped up in several autosport magazines in the last couple of days. Audi was expected not to reveal any high-resolution shots of the car, but today they did just that.
Much has been said about the R15 TDI in the last couple of months and the ’spy pictures’ that came out. Other than similar rollbars the car is completely different when compared with its predecessor the R10 TDI.
The small pointy nose of the R10 has been replaced by a big nose section. Impressive sidepods (somewhat resembling the 2008 WR), interesting engine bay bodywork and a rear wing that looks like it has been taken off the other new LMP1 car, the Acura ARX-02a, are the major highlights of the car shown so far.
It will be interesting to see what this car can do against the Peugeot 908s and the Acuras.

RML AD Group Braves Chilly Snetterton
Marcus Potts/CMC
Sub-zero temperatures and overnight snow were not enough to deter RML AD Group from carrying out a first shakedown of the team’s new Mazda-powered Lola B08/80 LMP2 Coupé. The two-day test at Snetterton was also an opportunity to finalise the car’s revised livery for the 2009 season, with Mazda’s distinctive corporate blue now a significant element of the familiar colour scheme.
The long-range forecast had threatened heavy snow for both days, but the team’s faith was rewarded with at least one perfect day. Wednesday was dry and bright, although bitterly cold, and Brazilian Thomas Erdos managed sessions in both the morning and afternoon. “Under the circumstances, we achieved some very good running, and the car looks gorgeous!” he said. “It was too cold to get any real warmth into the tyres, and they never felt as if they were biting the road, but we learned a great deal about the car. Now I’m just looking forward to being allowed to run at full throttle,” he grinned.
In addition to the new Mazda 2-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the car is also running the new-for-2009 aerodynamic package, revealed last week by Lola. “My experience with the engine has been very reassuring indeed,” observed Erdos. “It feels very responsive, picks up power earlier than the old engine, and then kicks out more torque. Bearing in mind we run a smaller restrictor this year, that’s very encouraging and a very positive first impression.”
Overnight snow and early-morning fog reduced Thursday to a half-day, with no running possible until half-one. “The conditions were very difficult, and we were forced to curtail the second day, but over the two days we’ve learned a lot about the new car, the engine and the modifications we’ve introduced over the winter, explained Team Manager Phil Barker. “It’s been very productive, and good to have this shakedown opportunity ahead of our next full test in a few weeks’ time, when we’ll hopefully have the benefit of warmer conditions.”
Recovering from a viral infection, AD Group CEO Mike Newton was unable to drive, but attended the test. “We have had a very encouraging first run with what is effectively a new car,” he said. “Due to the conditions, we were unable to complete all our planned running, but what we did accomplish was enough to resolve several preliminary installation issues, and make it a very worthwhile test.”
The team was particularly grateful to the circuit staff. “The guys at Snetterton were fantastic,” said Thomas Erdos. “They had the tractor out and brushed the entire circuit, and over the last two days they’ve worked so hard to make the track user-friendly. They tackled snow and ice and they made every effort to ensure the track was safe to drive. I’ve only got the highest praise for them. Fantastic.”

Groupe ORECA
Team West-Tec is delighted to announce a new string to its bow, with the unveiling of an attack on the inaugural Formula Le Mans Championship in 2009.
The ACO backed series, for spec-LMP2 cars, supports most rounds of the Le Mans Series, as well as the Le Mans 24 hours itself and will culminate in its own 3 hour enduro in October.
Senior Team West-Tec personnel have been active, and successful, in LMP2 in the last few years and the team sees this as a natural progression.
With 430bhp cars prototype cars, with six-speed sequential gearboxes and carbon brakes, the series will offer a very cost-effective introduction to the exciting and professional world of Le Mans Prototype racing.
The team will be heading down to Paul Ricard later in February to test the ORECA-built chassis before hoping to take delivery of its own cars after that.
John Miller, Joint Team Principal: We have the resources and facilities to work with a prototype campaign and this will fit nicely alongside the existing team commitments in Formula 3 and Speedcar.
We are going down to Paul Ricard with drivers to test, although we are still wishing to speak to more potential pilots who are interested in the new Formula.
The car is stunning and is built to true LMP2 spec. It will offer tremendous bang for buck for performance compared to running budget.
Gavin Wills, Joint Team Principal: I was fortunate enough to lead the engineering on the Team Essex Porsche RS Spyder last year. We actually hoped to be able to run that car under own our banner this year, but those plans foundered with the economical problems of the world today.
However, we are delighted to be involved in the new Formula Le Mans initiative. We will be looking to win in 2009, before hopefully progressing back to LMP2 proper next year, preferably with the winning drivers from Formula Le Mans in 2009!
