Charity Donations - How To Set It Up + Status Updates
Thanks for choosing to take part in this exciting race event. For the first time, TORA will be using the event to raise funds for a charitable cause. In this case, The British Heart Foundation, a cause particularly close to my (CQR Aero's) heart (no pun intended).
The heart foundation is dedicated to the fight against heart disease. They are the UK's number one heart charity and through 50 years of funding cutting edge research they have already made a big difference to people's lives. But the landscape of heart disease is changing. More people survive a heart attack or cardiac arrest than ever before, and that means more people are now living with heart disease and need their help. As a result they have been reviewing their strategic approach with the help of staff, supporters and stakeholders. Their new strategy will give them powerful focus in their fight for every heartbeat, and enable them to lead the fight against cardiovascular disease more effectively. You can find out more about the charity here: http://www.bhf.org.uk/
With such a wide-spread membership, I think the easiest, and most secure way to raise funds for this event is through the "Just Giving" website. I have set up my own page for my personal fund raising, and you can easily do the same too (see more on how to, below).
Click here to set up your personal page: Getting Started
I then linked that to a specially created TORA team event page so we can all see our joint progress in fund raising (see here: http://www.justgiving.com/teams/theonlineracingassociation
You can join the team page by simply clicking here: https://www.justgiving.com/teams/theonlineracingassociation/join/
Once you have set up your personal fund raising page, if you are in the UK you can also set up a "Text to donate" number using the link on your page. For instance, I used my TORA race number, so if you text (for example) "TORA80 £10" to 70070, you donate £10 to the charity, through my page (100% is given to the charity, plus Gift Aid if you are a UK tax payer).
Just Giving is a great, trusted and secure way of donating money, and being safe in the knowledge that your funds really are being sent directly to the charity (no fees, no scams). I hope you'll join me in supporting this event in this way.
Regards
Chris

A quick update on the fund raising front from me:
Thanks to an overnight run of generosity from my colleagues (including one whose petrol-headedness clearly got the better of him - donating £100), I'm up to £230 raised so far with promises of more to come!
Is anyone else planning to set up a JustGiving page and help to add to this pot? Please see the first post in this thread to see how to (it's really easy) if you are. (Come on guys, let's really do something special!)
PS - Proof of my colleague's petrol-head(!) - this is his car:

Plenty of time yet mate. I did see that you'd set up a page though - good man!

I'll be donating 5p for every kilometre we complete, with half of that total going to the British Heart Foundation, & the other half going to a charity which is quite close to me; Felix Fund, the bomb disposal charity.
Felix Fund supports bomb disposal experts and their families. They fund therapeutic breaks for bomb disposal teams returning from Afghanistan and other welfare and rehabilitation facilities for EOD units. We also provide hardship grants for individual members of ‘the bomb disposal family’ in need.

I will also send a donation in aswell, my granddad had a stroke way back in 2002 and fought hard, it was last year, the year when we had the TORA Sebring 12 hours, he lost his life with a heart attack during the night. It was the reason why I couldn't drive at all......so Im doing this race for fun but also for me to remember him aswell.
