Post by nickyf1 Sun 31 Jan 2010 - 22:56

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/31/AR2010013101058.html

How short sighted is this?! How can something as silly as money hinder the exploration of space for the future of mankind?? I mean, surely being able to say, ''We humans have explored the galaxy, landing on other worlds, completely different environments to the place we call home'' outweighs ''We humans saved $12 billion last year''. I for one am very passionate about space flight, and to me, President Obama pretty much butchering any plans for the Moon, Mars, a flyby of Venus, whatever, just so some money can be saved is beyond me! Someone justify this for me!

I could probably say something much more meaningful and well thought out about this, but at the moment I am speachless!

Well... people need to eat, be healthy and we have to look after the soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan.

I for one think its a good thing. Why waste money going somewhere when theres bigger problems in your world which the money could be better spent on....

What i'm really trying to say is that big achievements in Human history should not be constrained by money. I mean, in the context of the entire galaxy, countries, wars, weaponry, money. Its just all so insignificant.

It makes my head hurt thinking about these things. Money, consumerism, the lot.

Sad

we do, you think money shouldn't be an object with big human achievements. unfortunately it has to some times when the country is several trillion dollars in debt. it would be great to expand the space program, but Obama has his priorities straight

I get it. But if we blow our cash on big historic achievements, there will be nobody to tell of them in the future... rendering them useless.

No, im not talking about that! I can't put what im talking about into words. Its quite hard, lol.

Of course we need to be fed, looked after, be healthy. I guess it just goes down to my personal opinion on what money has become.

i dont think our space adventures will amount to much until the world is united in a single government and hunger disease and inequality is eradicated. and those are only possibilities, think star trek, or a successful world war,

The thing I love about space flight is just the whole idea of being off-world, it fascinates me. Looking at pictures of Mars.. Its a completely other world, and seeing the Earth from space is the answer to our problems, if every single person could see it (not like ive seen it, i'm just going by my personal opinion of what its effect could be) the world would be a better place.

Anyway, NASA have detailed their new plans in the wake of the Obama budget, which include the scrapping of Constellation and more incentive for commercial businesses to provide space vehicles for manned Lower Earth Orbit missions. There are still talks of Mars missions, and missions to near earth asteroids, possibly using the Ares VI heavy lift hardware. Smile

I always preferred Babylon 5. The story was head and shoulders above anything cooked up in the Berman era.
