Project Constellation canceled
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/31/AR2010013101058.html
How short sighted is this?! How can something as silly as money hinder the exploration of space for the future of mankind?? I mean, surely being able to say, ''We humans have explored the galaxy, landing on other worlds, completely different environments to the place we call home'' outweighs ''We humans saved $12 billion last year''. I for one am very passionate about space flight, and to me, President Obama pretty much butchering any plans for the Moon, Mars, a flyby of Venus, whatever, just so some money can be saved is beyond me! Someone justify this for me!
I could probably say something much more meaningful and well thought out about this, but at the moment I am speachless!

Re: Project Constellation canceled
Well... people need to eat, be healthy and we have to look after the soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan.
I for one think its a good thing. Why waste money going somewhere when theres bigger problems in your world which the money could be better spent on....

Re: Project Constellation canceled
What i'm really trying to say is that big achievements in Human history should not be constrained by money. I mean, in the context of the entire galaxy, countries, wars, weaponry, money. Its just all so insignificant.
It makes my head hurt thinking about these things. Money, consumerism, the lot.

Re: Project Constellation canceled
Big achievements are less important than the well being of an entire nation

Re: Project Constellation canceled
we do, you think money shouldn't be an object with big human achievements. unfortunately it has to some times when the country is several trillion dollars in debt. it would be great to expand the space program, but Obama has his priorities straight

I get it. But if we blow our cash on big historic achievements, there will be nobody to tell of them in the future... rendering them useless.
Re: Project Constellation canceled
No, im not talking about that! I can't put what im talking about into words. Its quite hard, lol.
Of course we need to be fed, looked after, be healthy. I guess it just goes down to my personal opinion on what money has become.

Re: Project Constellation canceled
i dont think our space adventures will amount to much until the world is united in a single government and hunger disease and inequality is eradicated. and those are only possibilities, think star trek, or a successful world war,

Re: Project Constellation canceled
The thing I love about space flight is just the whole idea of being off-world, it fascinates me. Looking at pictures of Mars.. Its a completely other world, and seeing the Earth from space is the answer to our problems, if every single person could see it (not like ive seen it, i'm just going by my personal opinion of what its effect could be) the world would be a better place.
Anyway, NASA have detailed their new plans in the wake of the Obama budget, which include the scrapping of Constellation and more incentive for commercial businesses to provide space vehicles for manned Lower Earth Orbit missions. There are still talks of Mars missions, and missions to near earth asteroids, possibly using the Ares VI heavy lift hardware.

I always preferred Babylon 5. The story was head and shoulders above anything cooked up in the Berman era.

I think hes saying it will kill jobs in the space industry, which makes sense. but there are still other NASA projects other than project constellation
Re: Project Constellation canceled
Well.... I still think the ISS should be finished and we should be looking at a more global approach to the space industry.
Mind you I also think the Federation is an achievable goal in the future lol

THe shuttle is set to end in 2010....even if it is extended, the shuttles cant take much more....its only a matter of time before the next one tears up or blows up(i know it sounds morbid, but its the truth...) NASA only does Shuttle. The Airforce does the Rockets(my dad works on the payloads(satelittes) for the airforce and on the rockets themself.) So remember, Airforce/LockheedMartin=Rockets NASA/Boeing=Shuttle
They are completely seperated on their own bases. I wouldnt say much else unless you know more and you work or somebody in your direct family works out at the cape(Cape Canaveral) or Kennedy(Merrit Island). Brevard county is about 70%-80% Nasa and Airforce workers. Plus not only will this affect FLorida. But Texas, Virginia, Alabama, Utah, and California will be indirectly affected.
Re: Project Constellation canceled
My dad works for a government contractor and after that im not allowed to say much else. so i know what you mean about budget cuts. no one knows what the future holds for the space program, just because this got canceled i saw something the news saying the new focus could be unmanned moon explorations, I also found out the even if they could get a rocket to the moon with men onboard, they couldnt land because they weren't designing a landing craft or something like that
Re: Project Constellation canceled
Yep, loads of NASA centres across the country, constellation already had plenty jobs being done, all of them are being lost to the private sector now.

They were going to use the Orion spacecraft (similar to Apollo, but 2.5 times larger) so they would have been able to land easy (y'know, the old retrofire and re-entry that all space vehicles use, including Apollo, the Space Shuttle and the Soyuz)

Oh wait, just read it again... I misunderstood..
But still, they were going to use the Altair Lunar Lander.
