Its a shame the track is going to suck. ''Purposr-Built Facility'' means its gonna be a tilke track.

Re: F1 To Texas
F1 cars are safe enough to use Grade 2 circuits! Okay, well, slightly modified Grade 2 circuits.. but these new Grade 1 circuits are attrocious! Like Martin Brundle said, ''A good track starts somewhere, goes somewhere, and then goes somewhere else, then comes back to the place you start''. Martin is of course talking about tracks like Spa and the Nurburgring.
Watkins Glen could easily hold a grand prix! They have been putting in more run-off recently, Tarmac too, they also installed Grade 1 standard Kerbs and regulation white lines and stuff like that! The Esses are fine, some run-off could be added to the second ess to stop cars vaulting over the barrier and make use of more advanced techniques for run-off, like having the run-off banked at a steep progressive gradient (more friction from gravity to slow the car down, and also makes it less likely for the car to reach the barrier and go over it)
Then you get down to the bottom end of the track, the bus-stop and the enterance to the Boot. This is the only place that would need alot of reprofiling. Keep the old layout, but build an alternate route for F1, say they went into a new left/right compex before they got to the Bus-Stop, then went across the current track into the boot.
Once you get into the Boot, all that needs done is increasing run-off legnth, making the barriers nicer, getting the marshal facilities up and perhaps build an F1 pit lane on the outside of the top straight? Doing something like that to an existing track like the Glen costs much much less, will probably work better and it gives Bernie his New York State Grand Prix.

not necessarily.
if it's american, they may want the distinction of having it designed by an american engineering firm.
we havent even seen layout yet. if it's crap then we can deride it, but until then...f1 back in usa is pretty neato.

watkins glen dosent wanna put forth the money required to host such an event.
besides, monticello park already put forth it's bid, and it's much closer to NYC than the glen.

Re: F1 To Texas
Tell me the last new purpose built F1 track that had a particularly good classic layout that puts it up with the best on the calendar. And also tell me the last one that wasn't designed by Herman Tilke.
I can see Hamburger shaped Garages and a Coke Bottle Hotel, lights and everything... oh laawwd.
EDIT - I'm not saying the Glen want to do it, i'm using it as an example of how existing tracks could be modified if Bernie had any sense in him, and was a fan of good motorsport.

Re: F1 To Texas
well, if bernie had any sense in him, he wouldnt have told the F1 fanbase in the US to f-off "we dont need you"
then come crawling back.
but nevermind that.

Re: F1 To Texas
lol, putting it in austin is putting it in the desert...not to mention texas pretty does whatever the hell they want when it comes to building things. you have to remember that
race tracks are massive things, not very NIMBY...
throw in the typical american hatred for all things fast and dangerous. and you've got yourself a sticky situation in most urban settings.
bernie may have wanted his NYGP but it's just not feasible. the city is broke and couldnt invest in what would be necessary. local government would deride as wasteful spending.
but texas?
texas probably said "we'll build the dang thing, ya'll just come bring us money and loud cars"

Re: F1 To Texas
I think it's great that there is going to be a US GP once again, yeah it's in Texas but the Texans have always been the ones out of America to do stuff out of the ordinary so what does this mean most likely the traditional circuit that F1 people know of will be thrown out the window so they can do their own thing. and for god's sake Austin Pick a location for the dan g thing already! you say you've been in talks with Bernie since 1999... that's before the INDY US GP! and you havn't picked out a location in those 10 years?!?! give me a break!
