Re: Wikipedia in wir ain leid!
lol yeah, I am struggling with some of the words and their meanings as well.
Re: Wikipedia in wir ain leid!
Its different to Western Scots though. I usually stumble on things like ''ane'' (''wan''... ''one'' in English) or things that end in '''aa'', which I would normally sae ''ae''

Re: Wikipedia in wir ain leid!
lol I only say because my nan (from Old Hill) got given a copy of Genesis from the Bibe written in Brummie. It's utterly brilliant!
Re: Wikipedia in wir ain leid!
I'd love to have a go in my best Brummie accent!
interestingly, Scots is classified as a seperate language to English by government, and was spoken in the ''lallans'' (And Gaidhlig in the Highlands) before the Kingdoms of England and Scotland joined in 1707. If we were still independant, theres a good chance everything in Scottish media would be written or spoken in Scots. The education authorities of the late 18th century made sure that all over Britain, kids were taught things in English, which has practically killed Gaidhlig in Scotland (apart from a few remote areas) and has caused Scots to be regarded as mere ''slang''.
Its always interesting reading up about these things

Re: Wikipedia in wir ain leid!
Ah've read enough Irvine Welsh tae unnerstaund written Scots a wee bit. For me not trying to follow it and just read quickly is the best way to understand it.
My lady is Scottish and it is like we're speaking different languages at time. My personal favourite words are chankin, oxter, dreich, and bawjaw
The one that bugs me is juice (I know redbeard will back me up here)
This is juice:

Re: Wikipedia in wir ain leid!
Aye it is! What do you call it?
Or alternatively its called ''Ginger'', and if you take down some empty ''Ginger Boatles'' or ''Gingies'' to the nearest newsagents, you get 20p
Bawjaws is a personal favourite of mine As well as the classic mother threat to one of her weans: ''all take ma hawn aff yer face!''

It is the nectar of the Gods.
It is paradise canned.
It is perfection given liquid form.

Re: Wikipedia in wir ain leid!
Its 'pop'...pure and simple. On the subject, Aussies call it 'lolly water' which is either funny or just weird depending on who's saying it.
I do love Irn Bru, second only to ginger beer in my books though I am partial to a Jager-Bru too. I've heard gingies/janglers used plenty...does a good job of describing what a crate of them sound like. Is there a Scots word for onomatopoeia?
