Re: Show off your latest purchase
A question on a prospective purchase..
Am I better off buying a 13'' Macbook Pro, or am I better off buying a PC laptop at around the £800 mark?
Do macs last longer? I want something that will last me at least three years before it starts to die.
And as for running bootcamp or parallels to run Windows on a mac, will it cost me much to get Windows so I can run Solidworks?
Essentially I need:
- Good resolution
- Fast multitasking ability
- Good/fast graphics (but not in the gaming sense)
- Long lifespan

Re: Show off your latest purchase
Will a 13" screen not be bloody tiny for Solidworks? I found 15" to be on the limit with SolidEdge with a few toolbars and would often prefer to use it on a larger screen.
With the Apple, it will be built well and hold value quite well too but at that price you are stuck with the Intel 4000HD graphics which aren't all that great. Looking at the cheapest 13" MBP (education discount to get to £8xx?) you get 4GB of ram, i5 processor and 500GB hard drive.
If you don't need it to be that small then I'd be looking at the Dell Inspiron 15R SE >>HERE<< 1080P screen, i7 processor, 8GB ram, 1TB hard drive and a pretty major graphics upgrade over the MBP. Factor in that you won't have to pay for Windows (if your college/uni is part of the Microsoft Dreamspark you might have been able to get it for free anyway) and other than the strength of the Apple brand it's hard to take one over the better specced Dell.
If you like the Dell it's worth keeping an eye out on the Dell Outlet site as that is where they get rid of cancelled orders so they are as new and still come with a standard 1 year warranty. Lots of resellers for these on Ebay so you can often pick up the same model for less with extra features such as >>Standard model for £640<<, >>With Blu-ray for £670<< or >>With Blu-ray and 16GB ram for £730<<.
Ok, so the Ebay ones have Windows 7 but Win7 to Win8 is a £15 upgrade at the moment if you really want it.
I was looking at getting one of these Dells but decided to stick more ram and a Blu-ray drive in my 4 year old Dell and build a new tower instead.

Re: Show off your latest purchase
I've wondered about the 13'' screen, I'll try one out tomorrow and see how it feels. I will be taking my laptop around with me a lot, transporting it between home, studio and uni on a daily basis, so weight will be a key factor too.
Quite interesting looking at those Dells, I hadn't considered those options.
Cheers for the info! Bookmarking those links definitely.

*Increased respect in proportion to the previous respect level prior to purchasing the above vehicle.
I'm glad you didn't get a douchbaggy Civic.

Re: Show off your latest purchase
do i expect to see an M&M Racing logo on her in the near future Ian?
...on Black Friday, i found on Bensbargains.net for $500 an LG 47" 1080p LED TV. couldn't pass the deal up, as it is cheaper than the 32" Vizio i bought a couple years ago.
