DRIVER BLOG>> Ben Chalk: Keepin' it Steel
Having been essentially heartbroken by Saturday's disastrous race in Suzuka, in which I had been taken out accidentally by Michael Rees, I was feeling slightly less hopeful for the up and coming battle in Sebring. Or at least, that's how I should have been feeling. Instead, I was feeling good, as I genuinely couldn't wait to be in the Nissan GTR and with JR Motorsports!
Sebring is a notoriously difficult circuit, located in Florida, and has 17 gruelling corners. It’s hard because it’s one of those momentum circuits and if you make a mess of it on any given corner, then you've essiantely lost it all. Basically, this is Russian Roulette, but held in The City on the Circle. But I've always like this track, and I love this friggin' car, so let’s get down to the story.
Qualifying went okay for me, though it coulda been improved by quite a bit. My first lap was standard, slotting in a 2:15, before going onto the one that matters more than anything. And that is the hot lap itself. Going through it again, it was so far so good, and I was on course for a high 2:10. Unfortunately, I locked up going into turn 15, and I was spat out, just like that. Subsequently, I qualified 10th, next to the Weismann of Chris.
Before the race begun, James Rumsey came out and gave me pep talk with me. He said something to the tune of this: "Don't worry about the qualifying times, as it's not a reflection of the race results. Its cruel, its long, but all you have to do is live at exactly at the point; Now, and be alert. That's the whole name of the game. Just do that, and it will love you for it". I'd like to think that the pre race discussion worked wonders, as on the opening lap, I jumped into 8th place behind the SLS AMG of Richy. (Damn, that car sounds so slutty!) For the next 2 laps, it was keeping me behind as well, proving that it wasnt all noise and no trousers. And then on lap 4, the Messerschmidt conked out (quite spectaculary, I must be honest) coming out of Bishop corner. Up into 7th, and next up was the JOTA Virage of Dan. Except that Aston was quite the tough nut to crack, as it would absolutely smash me through the twisty bits, but I would then gain on the staights. 2 laps later, I passed the Sumo Power Nissan of Simon. For the next 5 or so laps, me, him, Dan and Spartan would be going at each others throat, with each one of us refusing to give in.
After I had my pitstop, I came out in front of Simon and Spartan. The top 5 was pretty much settled in (though Ian lost it on turn 14), yet right until the end, we were going at each other. Having ran wide with about 4 laps left (correct me if Im wrong), I dropped behind the two of them. Then on Lap 22/24, I did what Simon had been relentlessly trying all race: By getting past the Mercedes. It remained like this until the end. Afterwards, James came out and congratulated me on a stunning debut race. I went over to Simon and Trooper and gave them my regards. So yeah, what an awesome way to have a race, AND we jumped to 2nd in the suppliers championship. Good times all around!
