Re: CMGraphix's New Car
Upon further reflection of your pre-reqs, I may suggest Mazda3 (or 2 if you desire even less car) When it comes to real world performance, what wins in "showroom stock" class racing tends to be the best performer and the stocker the rules package, the better Madzas do.
Re: CMGraphix's New Car
The Mazda 3 is based on the same platform as the Ford Focus.
The Ford is generally regarded as the better steer (and indeed one of the best in class) but the Mazda may have a few more toys on it for the money.

Re: CMGraphix's New Car
I really wasn't sure on the Astra Tubbi, but I guess it depends on face model. The older ones don't do it for me, but ones which are too new are still too much. The Mazda could be a consideration too. After the comparison of a BMW and Mini yesterday, I definitely want comfort and a level of "luxury" in the cab.
If it was as easy, I'd say decision is made with the BMW, and buy one this weekend, but the factors of it being tricky to add a bluetooth stereo etc, as well as cost parts for new wheels etc, I'm not sure whether 6 - 12 months down the line I'll be regretting it.
I'm thinking now:
BMW priority, once discovered on part prices and stereo flexibility.
Civic / Focus / C4 / Mazda3 / Astra

Re: CMGraphix's New Car
I'd be wary of the Beemer too unless you're pretty flush. When my Merc went wrong, the parts were insanely pricey, and only available new from Mercedes (coded to the individual car, so couldn't use 2nd hand). I suspect BMW will be similar.
