Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
That race was outstanding. So glad that Riccairdo won, he really deserved it, the way he had been driving this year. Hurting for Massa and Perez, however, as they both deserved to be up there. I'm not going to lay blame on either one right now, but am just glad they are okay!

To me, i dont think it was superb driving. I think it was a well timed missed apex and out braked himself just barely, that put him that fraction of a second behind where he would have been, had he nailed the corner.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Sergio Perez has been blamed for causing the last-lap accident that marred a thrilling Canadian Grand Prix and left both the Mexican and Williams rival Felipe Massa en route to hospital.
While the post-race trip was purely precautionary after heavy impacts with the tyre barrier triggered warning lights in their respective cockpits, both drivers were lucky to escape serious injury after making contact on the start-finish straight while dicing over fourth place. Perez had only just been passed for third spot by Sebastian Vettel, and the German was lucky not to be caught up in the accident as a crippled Massa sailed by on his left and the Force India crashed into the barriers to his right.
Both Massa and Perez were summoned to see the stewards – a visit that was denied by them being in hospital away from the circuit – but the officials did not waste too much time deliberating over the cause, eventually deciding that Perez had triggered the incident by changing his line and making contact with Massa while the Brazilian was trying to pass.
Whether the incident was the result of Perez's failing brakes and wearing tyres is hard to know, but the stewards handed down a five-place grid penalty for the Austrian Grand Prix later this month.
In the only other announcement of note, the officials also decided to punish Max Chilton for the lap one accident with Marussia team-mate Jules Bianchi, rubbing salt into the Briton's wounds after he saw his previously unblemished finishing record end in dramatic fashion after clipping the turn three kerb and wiping out his French colleague just two weeks after the team claimed its maiden F1 points in Monaco.
Chilton was punished with a three-place grid drop for the return to Austria.

That was an epic race! So happy for Ricciardo, great for the championship as Hamilton will now by hunting down Rosberg like he did at the start of the season.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
The three spot grid penalty for Chilton is actually rather realistic. A five spot penalty would have been laughable, as there is no way on Earth that Chilton could ever outqualify five cars in his Marussia.
Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
I did wonder how a five spot penalty would work. What they should do is utilise additional grid spots and put him physically further back on the grid. That or start him from the back of pitlane

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
People really need to get over the Massa & Perez incident. Racing incident in my opinion. Why can't people just be thanful that both drivers are alright? Huge crash that could've been much worse especially if Vettel had been collected by Massa.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
That's absolutely stupid. Between Massa's ambitious braking into turn 1, and the wiggle possibly being caused by Perez's brakes (David Hobbs actually hypothesized that Massa's brakes were fading as well, causing him to go deeper than he wanted), there's no way to blame anyone for that.
Which does contrast my initial reaction, which was that Massa got too optimistic. Cooling down a little, I think if anything it was a mutual-stupid by both drivers that caused it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think Perez knew Massa had him done, moved to defend but moved too late. Epic race tho, drive of the season from Rosberg.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
I must admit that yesterdays race was absolutely epic. Really thrilled for Ricciardo clinching his first GP victory. Glad it wasn't Vettel though!
Gutted for Hamilton though but it was a great drive by Rosberg. I think it's quite clear that Mercedes have an awesome machine on their hands. To lose 160bhp and still finish second is evidence really.
But seriously guys, I think it's time to move on from this whole "who is to blame" shenanigans. The stewards have taken their decision to give Perez a 5 place penalty. Let's discuss about something else and move on. Besides, we have something much more exciting to talk about all through this week anyway

I wonder how the modern V6 hybrids with control Pirelli tyres will compare with the mighty V10s in 2003, at the height of the Michelin/Bridgestone tyre war...

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Interesting article here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/26464195
If you count Scotland on it's own, it would tie fourth with Argentina for most world drivers titles. And, while the article acknowledges Finland as the most successful country per population, Scotland on it's own would beat Finland in this particular statistic. We have 1 more world title with a slightly smaller population.

It's utter madness to drop Monza from the calendar. As it's such a historic track that has provided brilliant races over the years.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
I can't stand Bernie. Only a few days ago he said that 'F1 has introduced a number of unnecessary rules' shortly before announcing standing restarts.
I can't wait for him to go to prison, if he doesn't weasel his way out of trouble as the rich seem to be able to do.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
^^^ Erm Bernie does not control on track action = He is the commercial rights holder has not changed safety car to standing starts does Bernie Run the FIA ?
Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
If you believe Bernie has absolutely zero influence over the FIA you are sorely mistaken. He knows he has the FIA over a barrel. He may not be the one that makes the decision but his grubby mitts are on those plans somewhere

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Er, what? You seem to be sorely misinformed Michael! FIA Sporting Regulations are ratified by the World Motorsport Council (WMSC), which is a panel of 14 members, one of which is Bernie (in his role as FOM promoter), he has one vote.
