Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Pictures I saw look like the air intake and top of the car ripped off, god only knows what that means to Jules' head! Having seen the pictures, It's not looking good; such a sad way to end a race full of cracking overtakes.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
What's bugging me is the people that are annoyed that the race went ahead. It could have happened in the dry! The problem is that there were recovery vehicles on track without a safety car.

Reports that Bianchi's father told France3 his son was being operated on for head trauma.
Also, the ambulance was because of the nature of the injuries. The helicopter was perfectly capable of lifting off. Chaddy was correct on that.

Closed cockpits should be a feature design implementation, you also get better air flow over the car

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Motorsports is dangerous, always has been and always will be. But I don't want to see closed cockpits ever in F1. It's single seater, open wheel racing like it should be. Bianchi's crash was a freak accident, I wouldn't blame car design for that....
Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
I'm not sure a layer of Plexiglas would prevent that injury...
Hell, anything short of a Sprint Car style cage probably wouldn't have helped. Like Zakspeed said, it's such a freak occurrence.

L'Equipe is reporting that the surgery has ended, and that Bianchi is being transferred. He is currently breathing on his own without life support.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
I haven't seen anything more than "in intensive care in critical condition following surgery"; I'd rather that than the other option which doesn't bear thinking about.

"Surgery has completed on Jules Bianchi. He remains in a critical condition in intensive care and is breathing unaided.
No further news expected until tomorrow."
I'm currently doing a live update post on my site if any of you want to keep track on news of Jules.
I'll only be posting information that has been validated by a credible source.

Always said that whenever there is a recovery truck on track then there should be a safety car. Couple that with the fact that the medical helicopter couldn't fly, race should've been flagged sooner.
This year's 24 Heures du Mans brought a new option: pit road speed limiters through the yellow zone. I'd like to think that would be a great compromise for F1, rather than either FCY or the current "maintain position" rule.

I have just seen a video of Bianchi hitting the recovery vehicle, it turns your stomach bigtime
A marshal is holding a green flag next to/just above sutil's car. speechless.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
saw it on utube
the recovery vehicle is going backwards carrying Sutil's car, with the green flag waving just above the scene. All of a sudden a car comes from the left out of nowhere, at quite a high speed and hits the vehicle with the left front. The G forces involved must have been catastrophic. Sutil's car was slammed to the ground.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
In the wake of Bianchi's crash a lot of people have mentioned the possibility of closed cockpits on F1 cars. What's your opinion on it?
I personally don't want it to happen. What bugs me the most is that if it was to happen we would most likely end up with LMP1 style cars, especially since the concepts I've seen would make the cars heavier and therefore slower. Also if a car was to catch fire or flip over surely this would hinder the escape time for a driver and make it difficult for marshalls medical team to get to the driver.
I want the sport to be safe don't get me wrong but if we take Bianchi's crash as an example the way of preventing his injuries would have been if there wasn't a recovery vehicle on the circuit. I think every circuit should have Monaco style cranes instead of vehicles on the circuit.

But I have to wonder if it would really work. It works really well at Le Mans and at the Nurburgring but I don't know if it would be as effective in Formula 1. Definitely a great idea though. The FIA should test it.

Just seen the vid, wont post it here out of respect. Insane crash, one of the marshals is lucky the Sauber car didn't fall on him too.
