I personally don't want it to happen. What bugs me the most is that if it was to happen we would most likely end up with LMP1 style cars, especially since the concepts I've seen would make the cars heavier and therefore slower. Also if a car was to catch fire or flip over surely this would hinder the escape time for a driver and make it difficult for marshalls medical team to get to the driver.
I want the sport to be safe don't get me wrong but if we take Bianchi's crash as an example the way of preventing his injuries would have been if there wasn't a recovery vehicle on the circuit. I think every circuit should have Monaco style cranes instead of vehicles on the circuit.
Was also thinking this. They can lift them up as high as you like like a feather.

Same here. They could easily afford it, even if it means deducting the costs out of FIA sanction fees.
Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
The video is the hard to watch but watching it im very glad it hit at a angle and not straight in with the nose. I personally think small built in to the ground cranes would be good. Build them behind the barriers and make sure they can reach a fair bit. No need for marshals just put a easy hooking point on the cars or even magnets and lift it over the barrier very quickly.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Thing is though, any accident at Monaco will be near a crane. At most other circuits with vast run-off, such cranes are rendered useless if a car gets beached in the gravel or stops anywhere short of the barriers. A snatch tractor is the only way to recover cars on a conventional circuit.
It's more a case of the location of barrier folds and access points rather than the cars/safety crews themselves.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
In Japan for the SuperGT series they have little 'tug type snatch vehicle on catapiller tracks' why wasn't that used instead of a 10 Tonne JCB?

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
What gave me the chills most about that video, was the marshal at guiding the front of the Sauber. If Bianchi was 6ft or so to his left, he would've hit that marshal. Ridiculously dangerous, as I only watched the race this morning, it was eerie hearing Brundle foreshadow the situation on his commentary before that actual accident occurred.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Safety car whenever a car cannot continue on the race track in the rain. Unless the car was driven off track by the driver when he/she retired. No ifs ands or buts.
Closed cockpit would/should never happen. why? cuz it already exists, and it's called LMP. nuff said. The cars would look radically different, and the cars would generally be bigger to account for the canopy and whatnot.
This WAS a freak accident, but the problems lay with the on track activies

Also a new rumour of Alonso going to Williams next year year even though Massa and Bottas are signed up...

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
I don't know if that would be smart for Williams. Bottas has as bright a future as Alnoso has a successful past. And Massa has proven to be great at chassis development, which young Bottas needs more than he does a primadonna former champion teammate.

That's a bit rough there Mikey! If I had an F1 team, Alonso would be my first choice as a driver. The Ferrari's have not been the best for a few years, yet he has remained competitive and a threat to win.
Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Yeah, I was a bit harsh, but with Ferrari's lack of pace this season, its making me think that while Massa was never a great racer, he is very good at chassis development.
That and its rather widely rumored that Alonso has a contractual clause declaring him the team's number one driver... whether or not his teammate can outperform. That would take a bit of fight out of any potential teammate before teh races even start... and why I called him out as a primadonna.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Massa was a very good racer until his crash. He only just started showing his former self last year. That, and I think the team did give Alonso more credence, which probably did have an effect on his attitude. I'm rather glad he went to Williams. It seems to be a good fit for him and he's doing much better.
Most teams have a number one driver I think, though in Red Bulls case I think they may be re-evaluating that!! LOL! The Iceman knew the score when he went to Ferrari, and I highly doubt he is intimidated by anyone. I could be wrong, but I really think he doesn't like the car.

Re: 2014 FIA Formula 1 World Championship
Theirs even rumors of Fred taking a sabbatical in 2015, which would be immensely idiotic on his part considering Ferrari WILL improve next year. I think McLaren is his only option, which is kind of funny because I rthought he burned all his bridges there, but apparently Honda wants him that badly. the other teams don't seem to want the baggage that comes with him. Red Bull signing Kvyat right away speaks volumes to me and Merc has no reason to change their line up.
Either way, i am happy with the prospect of Vettel going to Ferrari. I admire that he is following in the footsteps of his hero.

Neither Caterham or Marussia will be at the US GP, dark times for F1.
