Re: Nissan GT-R LM NISMO
should be interesting come silverstone. the design is so radical it might just be stupid fast. I hear rumours that they might run without a rear wing at lemans
Re: Nissan GT-R LM NISMO
I actually think it looks like a good looking car.

Re: Nissan GT-R LM NISMO
It's like someone thought "How would an LMP look if you had to run the entire race in reverse gear?" The whole concept is so crazy, that it's chuffing brilliant!
...Also, last year Marc Gene was an Audi reserve driver, who, before the crash of the #1 Audi in Practice at Le Mans, was meant to be racing for JOTA in a P2 NISSAN, how did we not see this coming?!

In which case I hope to see Harry Tinknell in the new car
I think it's a safe bet that Jann will have a seat. He was doing the testing at COTA.

I really hope this thing is bat poop fast to see how the other manufacturers try to deal with it!

Radical a Front Engine FWD car.
I am interested in seeing how competitive it will be.

Re: Nissan GT-R LM NISMO
As I haven't seen the Super Bowl ad I don't know if these things have been mentioned, but here are what I see as the major advantages to this concept:
1. Reduced parasitic drivetrain loss
With a restrictor plate limiting the amount of power the gas engine can produce, increasing the efficiency of the drivetrain and having less frictional/parasitic loss than the competition is essentially "free horsepower" the other cars won't have.
2. Better underside aerodynamics
The complete lack of drivetrain components to work around is probably a dream come true for that aerodynamicist. Sure you can attach or otherwise create a flat surface, but imagine being able to work with an already almost flat floorpan that did not have to have a transmission or driveshaft tunnel in it. On a racecar of this magnitude, that could potentially be worth a lot more in aerodynamic efficiency than we realize until we see this thing rocket down the Mulsanne. I'm no expert in aerodynamics so I truthfully don't know how much it could play into things, all I know is at this level every little bit is something.
3. Hybrid system rule-bending
I believe the current rules state that hybrid systems may not be active on the front wheels until the car is traveling at 75mph or faster, however I don't think there are any such restrictions on the rear wheels. With the car being FWD and the use of rear hybrid power not heavily regulated, it looks like Nissan may have found a loophole for a clandestine full-time AWD system. Coupled with the low-end punch of the hybrid systems and superior underside aerodynamics down the Mulsanne could quickly become an afterthought as we watch this car pull further away out of every corner. From what it sounds like so far this race is Nissan's race to win or lose for themselves, either by having a stellar performance or being plagued by technical difficulties; should the car hold together without hiccup then I'm not sure Porsche or Audi are going to have an answer for it.
Whatever the case, when a car like that Nissan comes along then the next season either it gets banned or everyone else has something like it to stay competitive.

Have to thoroughly disagree with you there. While the car features many innovative new concepts and ideas, it was severely off the pace of Audi Sport when testing at Sebring and also reported many personally expected handling issues with the car. I feel it will be very impressive to see them even relatively on pace with any of their LMP1 H competitors in their first season.

I guess I should have prefaced that with "if they can get that bucket of bolts to work right" haha! Nonetheless, I actually have faith in Nissan's ability to get at least some of the bugs worked out. While the systems themselves are entirely different, computerized part-time active AWD systems are still something Nissan has had extensive experience with even in a racing environment. It will be interesting to what happens.
Also, working with a motorsports team, I have learned how little trust to have in what my competition tells me is going right or wrong with their car. I know we have employed everything from a special "weight loss plan" that would never fly for the actual race but put up almost unbelievable numbers to intentional sandbagging during test days. As the boss would say, "We don't want them thinking they need to work harder to beat us, make stuff look broken and shake your head in disbelief when they walk by."
Not saying Nissan sandbagged a test day, but it wouldn't shock me either if they "suddenly made large advances in getting the technology to work correctly" before Le Mans. Best to have Audi thinking your crazy hybrid AWD setup will never work right rather than have them scrambling to come up with something to beat it when they see how fast it really could be. There's often an underlying strategy to these things, rarely is a manufacturer going to tell the whole truth about a racecar before it hits the track. Unless they get caught cheating, of course.

I've been following the car on the website I write for. NIMSO is doing a whole "NISMO University" thing with new car so we get to see what is going on behind the scenes.

Re: Nissan GT-R LM NISMO
Was sat in the car at WEC Silverstone claiming it will do 245 on the straights. Will be fun to see if they can compete at le mans, but don't think they have a chance rest of the season. Got a full leaflet on specs drivers and stuff like how 3% is sim drivers rest have f1 experience or testing experience or have won in gts etc.. I can scan and send if anyone wants it. Just Pm me.
But regardless its beautiful still

it defo looks the part i do get that
however i honestly do not think it will do well its a good conept but honestly i feel it will shred the tyres and keep pitting
if it makes me eat my words and places higher than 3rd then so it does

I think it's more likely I'll be the one eating my words. I can't tell if Nissan is pulling shenanigans or they really could be headed for disaster. For those who haven't heard, Marc Gene will no longer be driving and announced he will taking an advisory role instead. Makes me wonder if he could be trying to wash his hands of what could be an inevitable meltdown next month with that car. Add to it that the rumor mill says Nissan may not even try to run the car as a hybrid at all. Whether that means they just show up pretending it still works, drop out entirely, or even file to get the car waived in as a special case non-hybrid factory prototype is anyone's guess at this point.
With Nissan possibly a non-competitor and Toyota already announcing they know they stand little chance of winning, sounds like it's Audi vs Porsche business as usual like the last two races. The Germans could be a race to watch still, though. They have been absurdly close at the finish two times already.
With Riley Motorsports bringing that Viper, the GT class might be a one-sided affair when you look at how the Vipers have performed the past couple seasons.
Although, for all the mess of the prototype hybrids and GT class this year, I honestly think the LMP2 field has the potential to be some seriously good racing this year! Why? Because Ho-Pin from the Asian LMS is driving for Pegasus, Barbosa from Tudor will be there for Krohn, Turvey signed up with Jota, and that's just the front page on google news. Anybody else thinking LMP2 might be the one to watch this year?
