It makes no sense. Downforce is used to gain grip, why use it at all in drifting?

Because grip is very important in drifting (otherwise tire manufacturers wouldnt be a part of it)

more grip = more speed + better recoverable angle = better drift score/better tandum car.

But grip gained from downforce is an entirely different thing to grip from tyres .

The mechanical grip is needed to control the car yes, but downforce is really only needed for high speed circuit racing.
