Will Microsoft's Steve Ballmer announce a new Xbox at CES 2012 tonight?

On Monday night at 6.30pm (Vegas time), Steve Ballmer will take to the stage at the Consumer Electronics show and deliver his annual keynote for the last time. Microsoft has decreed via a quick blog post that the event no longer fits in with the company's product announcement timeline, and that it'll take a more muted roie in the future.

So what can we expect from Ballmer's last CES hurrah?

hmmm doubt will be xbox 720 more likely next windows cloud based software

I'm surprised Microsoft has said that, looking at CES now it is a lot more consumer tech and gaming focused than it used to be, so it seems an ideal place for them to make any major hardware or software announcements.

I reckon it won't be the Xbox 720, but some sort of Microsoft Tablet with Xbox features, sort of like the Sony Ericsson phones and Sony tablets with Playstation features.

M$ doesn't want to share the spotlight for their big announcements. They'd rather do what Apple does and invite the world's press to the Moscone Center in San Francisco for a special launch event whenever they have a new product.

If I'm not mistaken, the 360 and original Xbox were both announced at public events (E3 2005 and CES 2001 respectively).

I still have a number of contacts in the industry, and they reckon E3 is where the "Nextbox" will be announced, along with PGR5 (PGR was a XB1 launch title, and PGR 3 a 360 launch title) and GRID 2.

PGR5 due? That's not what I've heard....
360 was meant to have a 10yr lifespan so I I wouldnt really expect a launch before Xmas 2013/Q1 2014

Yeh PGR5 and GRID 2 were in the "surprises for 2012" section of this week's mag. I'm pretty sure that the Guildford-based studio "Playground Games" are working on it (the stealth-mode project title I've heard is "Forza World"). Perhaps why New York and other street circuits were taken/kept out of FM4. (They're currently hiring for several positions relating to a "AAA title", including a Vehicle Livery Artist and a Car Handling Designer - http://www.playground-games.com/careers.php).
