Playstation 4? - 20/2/13

-- Throw out all of the pre-rendered stuff. It's all touched up. What wasn't lagging here and there and whatever machine was pushing the real gameplay seemed to be struggling. We didn't see the new console so this could have just been a dev kit.

-- Watch Dogs on the PS4 looked slightly worse than the demo we saw last year at E3.

Worm, what would you do if you had sony or MS' budget and were told to "future proof" a console? I have an idea what ou are (likely) going to say, but I'm curious. The way I see it both console makers are in a bind (sony especially)... Sony cannot come out with anything too revolutionary, mainly because they tried to future proof the ps3 and bet on the cell processor when they should have bet on multithreading and gpu compounding. And the xbox 360 didn't even have hdmi in its first iterations, and dvds (dual layer or not) were a bit antiquated when it was released already.
Obviously its not gonna be bleeding edge, but surely with a whopper of a gpu (or two), a multithreaded hexicore (or quad even) chip, 24 gb of matching ram and flash storage would be faster than most folks are used to especially if its software is optimised to use it in the least.

Wow. That was a complete snorefest. Tech demos and "proof of concept" game snippets that looked like uninspired current-gen stuff. Gave up after Square showed an 8-month old tech demo and then told us to be excited for E3 because they're (shock horror) working on a Final Fantasy title.

Did they ever get round to showing the console, announcing a price or release date??

i did stay up to watch this and i have to say im not sold on what they showed and most of it had been showed at the last games expo and i think most of those were working titles and now we have more the same stuff.does anyone know if they told the people there how much each bundle was going to cost since i didnt see the end of it.i wonder what Microsoft have to offer for the next xbox console.

I would start by not letting AMD manufacture my processors that don't clock at near what they are advertised and I would have shelved the ancient controller instead of adding on the failure known as VITA to it.

Sony's had many issues with the PS3 that created the mess they are in. First off was developers wanted nothing to do with their console because it was too hard to make games for. Next was out pricing their consumer on launch. Basically after waiting a year behind the Xbox 360 they came out with a system that was worse than the Xbox for playing games and charged more. It was a Blue Ray player that you could use to play games instead of a gaming console with a blue ray on it.

Oh, the Watch Dogs demo and who knows what else were actually ran on a PC spec'd out to the PS3 for stability. They fessed up to that.

Horrible.

Be interesting to see what MS do now.

I felt the launch was a tad uninspired, watch dogs is cool, but we didn't see anything really new, and considering a launch is meant to memorable and 'explosive', there was a distinct lack of awesome trailers and all that.
Instead we got some 'Krank' or whatever it was called, and some other [Censored].
Their use of 'play' annoys me too.

Funny watching the Infamous: Second Son trailer talking about too many cameras everywhere when the PS4 is gonna put another one in everyone's living rooms (those stupid enough to buy one - based on first impressions)!

It was only the announcement guys yes I was irritated that I didn't get to see the console but still got a lot of detail. Still very early days, why not wait until after E3 to judge or better yet wait until you've been on it.

what I did see, I was unimpressed to say the least. That game demo was lacking in detail and resolution.

I say MS is sitting comfortably in their office going "yess they f***'d up, we will dominate!"

We were never going to see the same leap between the current generation and the next one. The games just now look amazing on tech which is ridiculously old, and seeing the demos and possible output from the new PS4 being the same as if not slightly better than a current gen PC isn't a bad thing once developers get their hands around it. Compare Forza 2 to Forza 4, or COD2 to CODMW3 and you can see a huge difference on the same tech. When the PS3 and 360 were first released there is no way people would be believe seeing the graphics of Halo 4 or Mass Effect 3 when compared to the start of the generation. I even find it had believing that ME3 is on the same console as ME1.

What will be interesting is how the physics of the games are handled rather than simply relying on graphics. The AMD card will have current gen abilities, ones which weren't available 7 years ago.

Controller looks like a gimmick, the light bar move thing with mandatory Eye is a gimmick and trying to catch up to MS. The Eye Toy was out on PS2 years before the Kinect and it faded from people's minds, I find it strange seeing it all coming back again. The old Eye Toy was actually an impressive little thing back when it was first released. The Kinect 2 is also rumored to be mandatory to run the upcoming Xbox.

Evolution Studios has at least dropped Motorsport and started a new IP withe the Car Club thing, which might be quite cool.

Overall I wasn't expecting much from the upcoming generation, and the PS4 just looks so far like an upgraded PS3. Will be interesting to see the further non gaming specs of it and what it'll be like overall, and see what MS comes up with, but I'm not expecting much more.

We don't have gaming consoles anymore. Its more like an Entertainment Hub'.

I am fine with whatever they want to do to create the "Entertainment Hub" as long as it doesn't compromise the gaming.

The biggest thing everyone needs to remember is, Benchmarks are only potential quantified in numbers. For example, the latest hyper-threading processors and cuda graphics cards as well as the vast amounts of ram people are stuffing in to machines these days are irrelevant if the software does not take advantage of it.
Here's to hoping the multinational oligopoly duo learn from last generation's mistakes. First, if MS tries the same proprietary hardware scheme that they used on the Xbox 360, I'm afraid they will find themselves at a great disadvantage next generation. This effect will be compounded if, like the 360, their handy-dandy proprietary connections lack any sort of up side. Say what you will about PS3 being hard to develop for, the fact that MS's hardware driver API, and physical HW interconnect is proprietary (and rubbish) was a bad choice for them last generation and would be inexcusable in the next.
Lastly, I know that Sony's bet on PPC/Cell processing did not turn out very well for them in the long run, but I like the fact that a huge company like Sony took such a huge risk by releasing something for consumers that was on the ragged bleeding edge. Yeah, it was expensive, but I can guarantee that those of us that have both MS and Sony branded consoles have spent far, far greater amounts of cash on MS's console than Sony's. Sony made it known that they were losing money on every console sold for the first what, 2 years of production? They bet on the fact that they would make it up with online purchases in PSN (and they eventually did). I also like the fact that with PS3 I dont feel like I'm getting ripped off when having to buy additional hardware for it. Hardware like bluetooth headset's, controllers, harddrives, and the like are much more compatible with PS3 then the inferior and more expensive Xbox 360's $200 120 gig hdd, the $50 wireless headset (that drops every time I go in the other room), and don't get me started about the wireless networking nonsense.
Ok, the cell processor made developers hate the PS3, but this was due to nothing more than a lack of development if the technology. Chip manufacturers decided to go another route. While this forced Apple's hand (making them one of the most successful companies in the world...ever), in the walled garden of consumer gaming consoles, this was an impediment to development. However, in 2006, the market could have gone either way, and if you are going to tell me that you would have bet against IBM (whose baby the cell processor was), then is it really sony that was the unwise one? I dont think so...
