Microsoft freezes out third party memory cards
Source: Computer and Video Games
As part of the latest update to the 360 dashboard, Microsoft will be locking third party memory units so they won't work with 360. Quick sell it now!
"Don't use unauthorized Xbox 360 storage devices," is the message being sent from Microsoft's Major Nelson. There's no clear reason given for the move but it's likely to have something to do with piracy.
"When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360," stated Nelson.
"If you've moved your profile or saved games onto one to 'back it up,' you'd better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games."
A quick check of Google shows that Datel has a 2GB units on offer and they'll be hit the hardest. We've contacted Datel for a response to the move.
User comments following Major's news were unsurprisingly full of talk about Microsoft forcing them to buy more expensive, official units and the like. "Not sure if this will get read by many, but I have echoed some of the concerns posted here w/ the accessories team," responded Nelson.
Will third-party pads be next? Once it starts where will it end?

Re: Microsoft freezes out third party memory cards
M$ sticking it to the 3rd parties. look slike they're still realing over the amount of money they're still losing on the gaming consoles. i dont think they've even seen a profit yet, and have to get it someway. lol. M$ should stick to software, and let toshiba or whomever to make their next system. maybe then, there will be less failure rates, and achance to break even

Along with Microsoft freezing third party memory cards, there is some rumours going around at the moment. That the Xbox Live Gold Subscription might be going up in price.

Same, but if it does go up, I WILL cancel auto-renew. Wait, there were 3rd Party Memory Cards? I honestly have never seen them in my chuff.
And I really really doubt/hope M$ doesn't increase the price of Gold, they will lose a lot of custom i reckon.
