What would make the WRC popular again??
Don't know about you guys, but what would make WRC popular again is to ban 4wd and to go back to the good old days of 2wd (rwd to be more specific).
Not only would it be accessible to everyone because it would be cheaper than even the new 2011 spec cars, but you would see some spectacular action from the two wheel drive machines.
Just given me the idea when I saw this video of Kris Meeke in the 2008 McRae stages in a mk2 Escort. Just watching his car control in this beast of a machine is extraordinary and listening to the 2.0 BDA engine sing as well! OH HEAVEN! lol
But I would guess some of you would prefer either Group B or even the Group A machines.

Re: What would make the WRC popular again??
The only problem i see with your idea is the lack of manufacturers that make RWD cars anymore, sespecially the size that you'd want on a rally stage.
But i think what we need is cars that are closely relatable to road cars. In what i consider they heyday (the only one i witnessed first had as im only 19 anyways) was in the late 1990's - early 2000's, when you could go out and buy an ideantical looking and near on performing Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Evo yourself, this made rallying "Feel" accessable and "of the people" rather than just a precession of Citroens you cant even get anything close to buying.
Also (as much as i hate to say it as im a huge fan) Sebastian Loeb has got to go, in the same way Schumacher killed F1 for alot of fans Loeb and his similar dominance is probably having a similarly detrimental effect.

I think something like a cunningly placed landmine (ok, maybe a bit extreme, so how about if it's loaded with paint or something instead of a lethal dose of explosives?!) might make it more entertaining to watch - everyone knows it's out there somewhere, just not where. Maybe no-one at all will hit it, even so, the possibility of random takedowns could be hilarious!!
Re: What would make the WRC popular again??
Its gained considerable popularity in america thanks to Ken Block coming in, but it still needs some more excitment, like for example, I can tell you now
sebastien Loeb will probably win next race. They need some way to level the field

To be fair, rallying in the 70's, it was relatable to the road cars. In them days, anybody could buy a mk2 escort and build them to rally and compete against the works teams cars.
If the FIA could set a bunch of rules in advance (for example if they could set the new rules for 2015), then it would encourage more manufacturers and give them enough time to develop and manufacture rwd cars for the road that could one day compete in the WRC. Not only that, but it would give the buyers something that is actually much closer to the works machines than say when Subaru and Mitsubishi were in rallying.
We've got to keep some of the technology like the sequential gearboxes because you can have them in ordinary road cars nowerdays.

Re: What would make the WRC popular again??
Was never denying the similarities af the road and rally escorts, just that i wasnt around then so i couldnt attest to the popularity of WRC or the reasons for it. Only from the late 90's when i can remember and do know.
honestly i dont think manufacturers would make that kinda leap to build rwd road cars for WRC purposes. (cars are FWD now for both financial and performance reasons) and WRC would need the higher profile in the first place to justify the outlay. if there not willing to fund a WRC team now there not willing to fund a road car programme to encompass WRC rules AND a WRC team.
I think more needs to be made of the superspecials. From watching the race of champions live in wembely back in 2008 i can tell you the closeness and atmosphere were amazing and really made if for me. The confines of a superspecial would also be more TV friendly.

Re: What would make the WRC popular again??
I personally would like to see the WRC regain its sense of adventure. Bring back the safari, bring back the RAC, bring back night stages! Make rallying a proper endurance motorsport once again. If a car company can develop technologies in an extreme and long distance environment, and then market these breakthroughs to the average joe, then thats a win for the car company.
The IRC's ''Golden Stage'' which is a live non-championship stage in which the winner recieves 150,000 euros is a fantastic idea!

Re: What would make the WRC popular again??
The WRC needs characters too. Petter and Henning Solberg are great personalities for the WRC to have, and you always have Ken Block...
The man in my avatar, Henri Toivonen, was a complete hero. Spectacular behind the wheel.

I disagree. McRae's passing had little impact on the popularity of the WRC.

Re: What would make the WRC popular again??
The only real way to get the popularity of the WRC back up would be to get more manufacturers back into the sport, i used to love the WRC when Mitsubishi, Subaru, Ford, Citroen, Skoda and Peugeot were in the championship with top drivers, that was exciting and hopefully the WRC will be like that again one day

But remember. You can't manufacture a successful formula. It will come naturally.

Re: What would make the WRC popular again??
McRae's departure from the WRC definitely hurt the WRC's popularity in the UK. His death had nothing to do with the drop in popularity, the WRC was at current levels by then.
