This was in the early 00's though, not sure what the class structure was when the McLaren and whatnot where about.

97-99 the McLaren, Porsche, Nissan, Mercedes and Toyota were in what was at that time GT1, GT1's back in that day were just as fast as the LMP's, GT2 at that time is what GT1 is now and GT3's are what GT2 is today. Hence why you see Porsche's GT2 car say GT3 RSR because the GT3 cup was not in existance outside of the Supercup which those Porsche's were made specifically for. mide to late 90's the GT3 RSR was the lowest model of Porsche you could buy for customer use outside of the Supercup.

Anyways Toyota found the biggest loop hole ever for the 98 season that made their car legal. as stated in the rules GT1's had to have a space big enough to store a small buisness suitcase. while other manufactures made an area of the car specifically for that purpose, Toyota however said "if you drain the fuel take you can store a suitcase there" and it was tested! Granted it required cutting part of the fuel cell to fit the suitcase in there but it did in fact work and Toyota were granted permision to race. that is reading the rules at it's finest as it did not specify where you store a that item.

very close! the last time a Ferrari F40 raced at LeMans was in 1996 where there 4 cars in the GT1 class, 3 were entered by Italian run Ennea SRL Igol team and 1 by French run Pilot Pen team

It's a single event just now, depending on popularity and success I see no reason why it wouldn't become a mid week series at some point.

I've been wanting to race LMP but feel much better in a GT2 car in the current ISCC, this will give me a chance to try LMP and still drive a beamer.

ah thats cool, i was thinking it would be cool to run it as a 'historics' championship based around le mans
