Xbox 720

The next-generation of home consoles – the next Xbox and the PlayStation 4 – will be ten times as powerful as the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
That's according to programming legend John Carmack, who told Eurogamer that Microsoft and Sony's new consoles will "be here in a couple of years".
This week a new report suggested Microsoft will reveal its next Xbox at E3 2012. A 2013 launch is rumoured to be in the works.
In March new job listings suggested Microsoft was ramping up development of its next generation Xbox console. The evidence seemed to suggest that the system is so early in development that the graphics hardware at the very least hadn't been locked down.
Sony, however, continues to push its ten-year lifecycle prediction for the PlayStation 3.
In fact Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer at E3 last week that it's a case of "ten yeas plus".
"From a Sony perspective, we're very comfortable with PS3 and the way that market's developing," he said. "We're highly focused on launching Vita as a next-generation portable now some seven years after PSP was launched. We're really not looking at anything beyond that at this stage."
"The next-generation will be here soon, a couple of years," Carmack told Eurogamer in a new Rage interview.
"It'll be another ten times as powerful as this [PS3, Xbox 360]. I'd be surprised if that doesn't last over a decade before people wind up saying, well, we've really tapped out everything you could possibly do on there."
Carmack said that the next-generation will present game creators with a tough challenge: how do you make game graphics stand out?
"The better games get the harder you have to go to give a delta people care about. That's going to be a challenge for the next-generation of consoles, to show what pack-in title is going to look so much more awesome than what you get on the current ones that people want to go spend $300 on a new console.
"They'll be able to do it on the next generation, but it's going to be much harder."
Crysis 2 creator Crytek is thought to be making Timesplitters 4 for the next Xbox, using DirectX 11 in development.

Seeing as they're all going for the exercise and or "family" market now (facists), It will probably have the unnerving name of "Xbox Home"

Re: Xbox 720
Based on the horribly laggy games that are all over XBL, I really don't think that most xbox owners in the US have a fast enough connection for the next gen of consoles to go disc free.

Re: Xbox 720
disc free doesn't mean more lag. Just means either games are saved in the cloud or on your hard drive or flash drive. Only lag will be an issue if they are heading Onlive cloud based gaming or iracing browser type gaming, but the lag issue with both of those techs is easier to manage tbh.

Re: Xbox 720
I don't mean the games would be more laggy, I mean that most people do not have fast enough connections to download games to their consoles in a reasonable amount of time. I live with one of my college roommates and we pay comcast an arm and a leg for our connection because everything we do requires internet access, but if i were at my parents house, it would take me literally all day to download more than a game.

Re: Xbox 720
It's too early for the industry to go completely disc free and rely on didgital downloads. Like narboza said, the internet isn't quick enough for everybody to pick a game and download it within a minute. Not many people will be patient enough to sit for a few hours once their game downloads and installs.
Digital flash cards/carts on the other hand could be the way to do it, alongside digital version. The PS Vita will be a good measure of the system, as they offer the flash cards in stores and online through the PSN on the same release day. Digital, however backwards it may be, is usually much more expensive.
EDIT
Here's the report.

I reckon you will definitely be able to stream games on this, onto your Xbox, your Microsoft tablet/phone/pc/whatever.

Like in 3001: Odyssey Three, we will all have computer systems linked into our brains, a source of information and leisure on tap, networked to everyone else and installed at birth.
Scary stuff.

Re: Xbox 720
I don't think the Xbox Surface will be the '720', but more like the PS Vita I think. I doubt we'll move away from regular consoles and onto the kind of hand-held devices we're seeing. I think the two will integrate with each other a lot though.
I can't wait, for what I hope the 720 will be though, it should be an amazing bit of kit!
