and it'd be better at someplace like the new meadowlands stadium because..........?
it's probably because they dont think it will attract enough people to fill an NFL stadium.
I'm a believer in the MLS, but a pessimist when the "best teams in the world" try to promote the game in the states, I cannot see any more than 20,000 people show up for this, in which case...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Bull_Arena_%28New_Jersey%29
...New York / New Jersey, whatever, its a Soccer specific stadium and It will look a lot fuller than Yankees stadium or indeed the Metalife stadium for that matter.
In order to fill an American sports stadium for a Soccer match in New York, you need to have Glasgow Celtic show up against one of the big Italian teams, any other team would not pack one of those coliseums.

Re: Sport!
It might also be because having the thing at the Yankees stadium might grab more peoples attention, versus holding it in a soccer stadium somewhere.
And an NFL field is far too small dimension wise.
I believe Celtic went on a US tour a few years back. I'm not sure how popular the games were.

RIP, my thoughts go out to his family for their loss.
It must have been a very unlucky hit, I have seen a lot worse in Speedway before.

Yeah, so have I, but it was just the parts of his body that had impact, the crash broke his neck, but he actually died of internal bleeding because his chest hit the handle bars at such force

Re: Sport!
Bit of a disaster last time wasn't it..
Well, at least Wales adds the Millennium Stadium to the bid... But we do have quite a few big stadiums, collectively, and I think holding it isn't entirely outwith the realms of possibility. Glasgow will have held the 2014 Commonwealth Games by then, and perhaps even the 2018 Youth Olympics that we're bidding for, so that will give the bid a good boost.
The amount of venues over 50,000..
Croke Park, Dublin - 82,500 (although the GAA probably wouldn't allow it to be used)
Millennium Stadium, Cardiff - 74,500
Murrayfield, Edinburgh - 67,200
Celtic Park, Glasgow - 60,832
Hampden Park, Glasgow - 52,063
Aviva Stadium, Dublin - 51,700
Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow - 51,082 (probably won't have any other uses by then )
No big flashy stadiums like you see in England, or that lovely Allianz Arena in Munich though.

Re: Sport!
The only way the European Cup would come to Ireland, Scotland or Wales is with a joint bid.
An English European Cup certainly wouldn't make use of the Aviva Stadium or Murrayfield, let alone Parkhead or Ibrox... Although they probably would make use of the Millennium Stadium.
And having a European Cup with ''the UK'' as a host would throw up the whole Team GB Football team at the Olympics issue all over again. The SFA certainly would never buy into such a thing, unless it was England and Scotland as hosts, which would be mainly concentrated in England anyway.

If they beating the likes of Italy in "meaningless" friendlies, then they certainly "do" soccer.

Oh, I know they are a good team. But the general perception of Soccer in the USA is somewhat skewed.
There are a few American's playing for Rangers.

My old English teacher, the father of Aiden McGeady (Plays for Spartak Moscow and the Republic of Ireland) used to play in the states, for a Californian team in the 80's.

i'd say it's growing. especially with the influx of satellite TV and espn forcing it down our throats.
you cant rule out the latin american influence as well. we're just now seeing kids from the mid 90's onward peaking.
so i think there's a good crop of american talent being grown now. especially now that they see what kind of competition that they have to face internationally from an early stage.

Re: Sport!
I think the Americans like the idea of international competition, like the World Cup, which is always quite popular in the States (or atleast that's how it was perceived to be in the USA here). It's something that the ''stick and ball'' sports don't have, because they are purely popular in America, and not so much elsewhere.
I mean, we have Ice Hockey teams and American Football teams here in Scotland, but internationally, these kind of sports are nowhere near the kind of popularity that football has.
