Re: SimCity 2013
Wil they release it for the Mac? Used to play the original on my Amiga 500 (which still works) for countless hours.

I can picture it now.Richy59 wrote:Anyone else actually getting this? We'll need to set up TORA Region :3
A beautiful vast region with a population of about 100 people, 3 dogs, and 20 race tracks.

yes!
Re: SimCity 2013
Apparently the EA/Origin servers have taken a battering over the launch and not many people in the US have been able to play at all. With Europe and the UK coming over the next two days, I fear this will only get worse
Stupid online only games that should just be single player :/

Couldn't agree more - I have been toying with the idea of setting up a VPN from America to allow me to purchase but decided against it so that they "hopefully" have time to fix the server issues.
Although, the thought of me having a High Tech City and leaving BG Smithy with a Dirty Industrial City is rather amusing.

I'd love to give recreating my home city a go. Although I'm not sure the building area is big enough..

Glasgow has never looked liked that when I have been there.
Re: SimCity 2013
I love the SimCity franchise, and actually played the original on a Commodore 64 back in... crap, I'm too old to remember. The new one is online only? Forget it. I'll just play SimCity 4. I'll save my rage when the new Xbox is online only as well.

Re: SimCity 2013
Nah, the 'tiles' are 2km x 2km, which severely limits expansion. The idea behind it is to make a region, and have one area a suburb, one commercial, one industry, one tourism etc etc. Not ideal, but the simulation is that advanced that they reckon anything bigger would suffer. Have to bear in mind that this SimCity is the first product of an pretty new Maxis team, so it can be seen as their 'first' game and will only get better.
It is online only which does suck. You can make your regions private, and just invite friends, but you still have to be online for it. Most of the simulation for other cities run on the server whilst your loaded city runs from your machine. I think they underestimated how popular the game was and how taxing it would be on their servers.
It's a marked improvement over SC4, of which I was a huge fan. Only been playing since SC2K though

When were you last in Glasgow?
1973 perhaps?
In all seriousness though, it's seldom as nice as that, weather wise

Re: SimCity 2013
Used to go there two, three times a year with work. Mainly to Erskine but also Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Re: SimCity 2013
Ah, I see! I had an uncle who worked in there many many years ago.

I completely understand the idea behind what they are doing. i just dont think they implemented it very well.
the plots of land are tiny, and maxis has said they will address it...but you should be able to create huge sprawling metropolis's with suburbs and commercial districts....not vast expanses of land...then incredible density then vast expanse of land...
there are other issues too... like where the hell are subways? why do i only get one connection to the highway? like why cant i extend highway backbone down into my city, like NY or Chicago... and no more trains? this is bananas.
and that penny arcade comic is right on. they spent a lot of modeling on Sims, but people dont actually care that much. i'd rather be focusing on the whole city rather than one person in it. if i wanted to play the sims, i'd have bought the sims...
then they are complete fools. it's one of the most popular games of all time and has a VERY devoted fan base. to think they could butcher the game and get away with it is the very definition of hubris.Richy59 wrote: I think they underestimated how popular the game was

Re: SimCity 2013
I'm pretty hopeful that the sequel to this SimCity will be better and that now they have the basics down they can focus on expanding the game area. The have already said it is very possible, but they reduced the size to allow lower spec machines to enjoy the game. That to be honest is pretty irrelevant, as they could hav simply made a large variety of regions with various sizes of game areas and peoe could choose depending on their machine. CitiesXL - as buggy and broken as it eventually gets - nailed the sprawling metropolis. Many assumed SimCity would make a game of that scale, but done properly. Seems they have made SimTown instead.
I'm still über excited, I just hope I can play this weekend.
