there is the SRT Viper, and the the SRT Viper GTS and then the race car. but the only difference between the base and the GTS is a handling pack and a few pounds. engine is the same
So like the C6, Corvette "base" then the Z06 upgraded suspension and lighter.. Then the ZR1 is just in a class of its own lol again not sure how the C7 variants will be.
And I was half right :p I remember SRT saying there was variants of the new viper

So actually, all those cars look the same. It's not just the C7 is similar to others but that they are all similar.

Haha you said base viper! But no seriously, how much is the base viper cost compared to a base Vette? And the Zr1 to the GTS?

My neighbor is a Corvette freak.
He has a 427 C2, a convertible 1971 ZR1 or ZR2 (not sure which), and a newer Grand Sport. Also has a new M5 and a bad ass green International Scout. He drives that 71 model every single day and it's loud as hell. All he does is cruise around in it. With my old mic you could hear it in parties with me if the window was open.

true, but the Viper's are low production, whereas the 'vettes aren't. That's the main reason why there is such a price gap
Re: the new Corvette C7
The performance is similar though. That's SRT's (it's still freaking Dodge) fault, not Chevrolets. When I see a Viper now I have the same reaction I do if I see a ZR-1. I like the ACR but it isn't jaw dropping other than having that massive wing. Some dude drives one that I see on my way to and from work. The rest of it just looks eh?
It hasn't been anything exclusive in a long time and hasn't looked jaw dropping since the second generation. The first gen was too basic for me to consider too much of it. That thing was a "look what we can do" car. Hell it didn't even have door handles or a roof. I do remember seeing one in a showroom at a now closed Dodge dealer in town and salivating though.

Re: the new Corvette C7
Sorry, I do think the most recent version was an improvement over the previous ones. Didn't type that in there and was meaning to.
Re: the new Corvette C7
Is it officially SRT rather than Dodge now or what? I've never understood that
Re: the new Corvette C7
Well I know the viper are on order only, which keep the value up. And the vette's not so much lol just about anyone can walk in n drive out

Re: the new Corvette C7
Doesn't make it any more quality of a car though.
A basic 2005 Viper with 70k on it is valued at $38,000 if you sold it private party in excellent condition. A basic 2005 Corvette with same mileage and condition is $24,000.
Originally the Viper retailed at $82,000 and the Corvette did at 50,000. That's about 46 percent for the Viper and 48 percent for the Corvette. I'd say that is the same even though the Corvette held it's value slightly better

Re: the new Corvette C7
Someone also mentioned no supercar in America earlier. I would consider the Ford GT, Rossion, and maybe the Saleen S7 to fit.
The Ultimate Aero, Mosler, and Hennessey Venom fit the Koenigsegg and Pagani category depending on your view of true supercar.

Re: the new Corvette C7
Mosler is American??? Never would of thought..
Other than the rest, the venom GT being the newest(2010 or 2011) and the S7-R or the Raptor, nothing really has come out/being released soon

Ford GT and Saleen fits what I meant to a point. The Rossion and Venom are kind of moot because they're British cars with an American badge.
What I meant is what we did with the Corvettes, GT40s, and Shelby Daytonas of old--take on the European Supermanufacturers with American theories and ingenuity. Right now, the Vipers are Italian, the Corvettes are copying every front-engine sports car made in the past 4 years, and Ford? Ford...Ford...nope, I've got nothing.
I guess what I'm saying is that there's no traditional American spirit to either the Viper or the Corvette. What we're known for is ramming a ton of power into something, making handling the afterthought, and still creating a better car than the rest of the world. Then Mclaren did the end-all version of that with the F1, the C6 finally caught up, and the Veyron does it right back. So when we turn over to handling, we're still a bit behind cars like the 458 and GT-R, and the only way we can compete is to copy the rest of the world.
I guess the best way to make a front-engined car is by using that design. Thankfully the Corvette has the traditional "OMG, Power!" of old, but I doubt it'll be any more advanced than the ZR-1 was, which still seemed a bit off to me.

Re: the new Corvette C7
The GT40 thing will never happen again. The time for a grudge against Ferrari, saying damn a budget, and going all out to beat them on their turf half the world away is over and is a once in god knows how long occurrence.
Those days are long, long gone. Not financially feasible, look at the LFA as an example of someone losing their ass attempting it.

Gm even said they had to improve the fuel economy or the new vette would of never happened, thanks to new federal laws

Re: the new Corvette C7
Stan, SRT was a part of chrysler since the Viper's inception in the late 80's but known as team Viper. in the early 00's they decided to branch out as a tuning arm, where we saw the SRT4,6,8,10 cars. 3 summers ago Chrysler then decided to make it a car company, which is why the Viper became officially an SRT as opposed to Dodge. They will be resurrecting the Barracuda in the next year or two, so they will make 2 cars instead of just the Viper.
Anyways, back on topic; Hailfire, the Viper is still the same viper as its always been, but they learned a few things from Ferrari in regards to materials and how to effectively make low production cars. Nothing on that car is from Ferrari or Fiat. It's still American inginuity at its best.
Of course it's not "classic" designs but a modern take on it. Circuits are tigher and more demanding in the corners than they used to, so better handling is essential.
Worm, I agree the GT40 thing won't ever happen again, altho what I do see is a revival of the muscle car era where cars slowly get more and more power. The only thing keeping it going other than the obvious is that the cars continually get better mpg's.
