TORA MSA World GT Championship Round 4:
Twin Ring Motegi - Japan
The two VAMR teams headed across Japan for the second GT Endurance round of the season at the Twin Ring Motegi. The drivers arrived at the circuit on a high after the excellent results at Suzuka.
As soon as the cars hit the track for the practice sessions it was clear this could be a strong weekend and with the TPR team sidelined for this event, the chance to capitalise in both championships was strong.
PGF-Kinfaun's Daniel Grain continued his run of form with a strong pole position ahead of the VVV Evonik Audi by nearly half a second. A hotly contested lead battle resulted in victory for the VAMR driver and the first virtual Aston Martin GT win since NJ Carsport in 2009.
He was followed closely by Christian Rose in the #850 who had qualified an equally respectable 5th place. However a technical issue resulted in him having to stop the car out on circuit, race over.
Having missed the two sprint events due to commitments at Daytona, Louis Satterlee returned to the saddle and looked to be back on the pace shown at the season opener. However, problems resulted in him having to sit out qualifying and start from the back of the grid. A mega start saw the young American fly through the GT4 cars but some mid-race contact affected the car's balance and slowed his rise through the field. 40th would be his final position in a tough race.
Siddall in the fourth PGF-Kinfaun DBR9 also had a solid weekend, finishing 29th overall.
Beechdean VAMR enjoyed their most competitive weekend to date with Wilson in the #4 car qualifying well inside the top 20, less than a second away from Rose's time. A spirited drive brought the Scot home in a fantastic 5th place. He was admirably followed up by Ian Maughan in 14th who had plugged away during practice and found serious time ahead of qualifying.
Chris Ford rounded out a successfull weekend for the team with 21st place at the flag.
Motegi also saw the debut of VAMR's own GT4 Vantage programme. A single works car for Duncan Ray was entered for the event and 57th overall was deemed a solid debut appearance for the car. Added to this, word emerged during the race weekend that the team's customer program was underway with another DBR9 provided for the British based MP Motorsport Barwell team. Rumours about of yet another DBR9 seen testing at Silverstone and what this may mean for the remainder of the Championship.
With Aston Martin's most successful race weekend in TORA under their belts, the team head back to Europe and the historic Hockenheim circuit. Hopes will be high for more of the same this Sunday.
