BLOODY HELL!!!!!
Re: F1 2010
They're reporting it was an upright, either there was fatigue in it (unlikely as it was a new part) or whether it wasn't up to the job, that hairpin looks to be one of the toughest corners on the braking/suspension, but I'm not sure. But also it must have taken alot of force to break the tethers...

Re: F1 2010
All the parts have a 'life' anyway and as you say it was probably a new part. Maybe just a stress fracture in the upright. The masive load was probably sufficient to further weaken the part. There's a few big stops before the final turn.
Of course we could just put it down to an Xtrac gearbox failure

That looks more like lag or something!

Re: F1 2010
Fu£* off you lot
it wasn't rear eirher otherwise it could have been our fault lol. To me it seems that the right one may have been incorectly manufactured and due to the cyclic loading and high demands of the circuit it failed. This switched all the load to the left side, which isn't designed for that loading causing it to subsequently fail.
Bruno is one lucky guy, that could have ended up a whole lot worse, can't imagine the feeling of seeing both your wheels fly off when your doing 194 mph!!!!
Worrying times for torro roso and the fia, what happened to the supposed "teathers"!!!?? Be interesting to hear what the fia have to say, the teathers have never worked whenever they have been called on.

Re: F1 2010
I know we'd have all done it but despite seeing both his front wheels part company with the rest of the car...he still turned the steering wheel

Re: F1 2010
Matt the teathers are tested to a max loading of 5000kg so the laoding goiing through the front suspension as the wishbones twisted and broke away would have been well in excess of that!!
Re: F1 2010
About the "Teathers".....
Yes they do work and yes they did work, BUT....
It was the part that they are Attatched to that failed!
Thats why the wheels went everywhere, they were effectively attatched to themselves after those uprights went.

Re: F1 2010
The last time I can remember tethers actually working was the German GP (Or was it the European GP back then?) In '05 when they had the super hard tyres and Kimi's tyre had a flat spot causing the whole front left to fail, sending the wheel across the nose and almost into Kimi's face before swinging back.

Re: F1 2010
Yeah, if those Thethers hadn;t been there Kimi would have been badly hurt. He was lucky.
Buemi crash is a weird one, no wonder he just wanted a moment to himself when he got back to the garage.

Re: F1 2010
i wasnt saying that the teatchers should have worked, i was merely making the point that i cant remeber them EVER working lol.
but yes richy it is a very strange incident. i spoke to an engineer at work and he said the only plausable explantation was a fatigue due to a sub-standard part.

Re: F1 2010
Steering link broke on the right front tyre- the front tyre immediately twisted to the right at high speed-transferring a huge amount of energy across to the other side and immediately all the carbon fiber in the front suspension was exposed to a transverse ( sideways load in the exact direction of the suspension pieces length) load for which the carbon fiber was never designed to tolerate.
That's why the entire front suspension exploded.
An explanation from someone on the PlanetF1 forum. I know its nothing official, but it makes sense.
Autosport has the Official line though.

Re: F1 2010
the autosport is slightly more accurate mate as it refers to teh correct part, an upright rather than steering. but yeas that quote explains the 'physics' side of it well. thats the big problem with Carbon fibre. its great but only for what its intended to do. when abnormal things happen, things go devastatingly bad.
Re: F1 2010
Just makes you appreciate how hostile the forces that these cars opperate at are. And as RL said, all the bits are designed exactly for what they are supposed to do, almost no tolerance.
