Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
Heres an interesting fact for you and it comes from a user over at Yahoo Eurosport:
From Stirling Moss via Twitter (@stirlingmosscom):
Fail for F1.“This is a terrible idea. The BBC has peaked at 10 million viewers this season, Sky has only 10 million subscriptions in total and I don’t know how many of them subscribe to Sky Sports,”
From Stirling Moss via Twitter (@stirlingmosscom):
The coverage will be like going into a restuarant having the starter & then being told you can only have half your main and no desert

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
To be honest, the deal is done. This is our F1 reality for the next seven seasons.
Formula 1 is no longer a sport, its a show. It has been for many seasons now.

Deal done or not, its a company in the shtuck about bigger events, and I'm not paying 5 times the tv licence fee for the year just to save News Corps arses.

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
So.
BBC get 10 live races per year, including the British Grand Prix and the final Grand Prix of the season. On these weekends, the BBC will also show live Practice and Qualifying.
Sky Sports will show the remaining races live and exclusive, with Practice, Qualifying and Race. For each of these races, the BBC will show the race, delayed, during prime time on the main BBC channel, probably after the One Show.. or something.
Now, consider what could have been... BBC drops the rights all together, Sky Sports pick up the WHOLE thing... Oooh, thats a bad scenario isn't it. Or perhaps Channel Five pick it up? Terrible production, and lots of ads. Same with Channel 4.
I believe that this is probably the best thing that could have come out of this, nobody is going to miss a Grand Prix. And yes, I am a little annoyed by it, but hey, lets take the positive out of this, its not the end of the world, its sport.

Oh yeah, its not the end of the world, its just a little shitty thing happenign in amongs all the other bigger shitty things that are happening in the world.
There is nothing positive in this.
This has been the worst F1 season I've ever had to witness. 2002 and 2005 have got nothing on this year.

Just out of curiosity, who holds the TV rights for F1 in the Republic of Ireland?

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
There may be some positive for a tiny percentage of the UK, the only positive is the people already paying the bloody riduculous prices for Sky Sports will get all of them. I would much rather it go back to ITV but they can reduce adverts like they do for the football. Maybe make ads every half hour instead of every 10-15 mins. I wouldn't mind that because at least we wouldn't have to pay for it. I am not gonna stand by and watch F1 fall apart, and the teams have done too much to help us. I think its time we gave the teams a break, and get something done ourselves. Because as soon as the viewers drop, so will the money, forcing someone to budge.

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
I think this will be great for F1. The more money they lose, the better, and the faster that F1 takes a good look at itself in the mirror, or the teams decide to screw it and race somewhere else to proper Formula One regulations.

Imagine having to pay Setanta for your F1 coverage! I do hear they do dynamite Rallycross coverage though.

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
Just because some of the races are on Sky Sports doesn't mean i'll stop watching the races. The Grand Prix every odd week is a family get together, its always nice. Every so often they might take interest in some BTCC/Support races too.
The internet will serve me for my personal motorsport fixes. Namely Indycar and Sportscar racing.

Plus 1
Endurance World Championship here we come
Nicky I guess a lot of people like me are fed up with paying for a licence fee which I have no use for any more, plus I wouldnt mind if BBC but money in other motorsport championships to cover it wont it just covers minority programming

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
How does the BBC License Fee thing work exactly? Do you have to pay it like its a tax or something, or is it a voluntary subscription to the BBC?

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
If you own a tv in the UK you have to have a license, paid for either annually or 6 monthly, one per household, can even get a black and white license, if you're stingy, and only have black and white tvs
Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
Its a voluntary subscription to the whole of television
BBC's entire output, including BBC America (only in America, a channel you will probably rarely watch, but we're paying for it for you), and radio stations (BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, 4, 4extra, 5live, 5liveextra, and then all the regional ones)
(This also includes any programs that a two hour canadian rain delay delays)
ITV
Channel 4
Channel 5
and all their sub-channels are "commercial" free to air, and will have commerical breaks, I dont think our funding goes towards their efforts as much as it does the BBC channels.
Then theres the subscription channels:
Sky (1, Living, Atlantic, Arts, Sports, Movies)
Then theres the on demand stuff
Sky Box Office ( Big name title fights, WWE live, and in the past the Premier League and F1 Digital Plus)
It costs nearly £150 to pay for the TV license for the year, in order to get sky's F1 coverage you'll need to pay £40 a month, so that means a yearly total of £630 just to see a season of F1, plus all the other sport that will happen, all the movies that will appear about a year after being in the cinema, and also the channels you dont really want to see.

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
So you're basically paying for the right to watch TV?
That seems slightly bizarre to me, to say the least.

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
I believe F1 teams are gonna see the bad side of this move after about a season or 2. F1 is gonna lose money we all know, due to lack of viewers. That means less sponsorships. Less money for the teams. FOTA will get together and say "Screw FOM. Screw Bernie. We'll make our own series, but make it cheap enough for Free to Air companies." I think BBC should put it on BBC4. That way they can get more viewers on BBC4, giving them money for other boring... I mean really interesting things, and we get free F1. So they kill two birds with one stone. More viewers on BBC4, get exclusive rights back to BBC! Time will only tell but from right here right now, F1 is f...ed.

The added bonus with the BBC is that there are NO commercials, except for the tv license.

Re: OFFICIAL F1 2011
Wow, that seems like a giant cluster.... of a way to do things.
I guess in the long run the 50/50 split with Sky won't really affect us in the US that much, since I will just watch a pirated stream of that instead of the BBC like I do now, but I'll be disappointed with the loss of the BBC team, minus Jake and Eddie.
