Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
Again... 2007. Mexico City. Packed crowds. The Peraltada in the background and 20 odd cars revving waiting for the lights to go out. Fantastic.
I really hope Indycar can drop the gimmicks and get some of this magic back. Its all about high powered action. It should be the ''USA's answer to F1'' like it used to.

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
The race was stopped due to the weather and the amount of cars that were unable to deal with the race altering conditions, while the Nissan Jim Richards (a New Zelander) was leading, it also crashed before the black flag came out, and of course black flag rules means you count back to the lap the leader completed.
Dick Johnson was 2nd but was influencing a confused and clearly alcohol driven crowd on the podium in front of a live TV audience, saying "I Crossed the finish line in the lead"
Also during this race Denny Hulme (A New Zelander and 1967 F1 world champion) Died of a heart attack halfway down the conrod straight in a BMW M3.
Jim Richards outburst was a combination of anger that the crowd would treat a winner in such a fashion who were clearly too drunk to mourn the passing of one of the regions only world champions only hours earlier.

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
This race was notable for the winning car being crashed and undrivable at the race's conclusion. Due to heavy rain a large number of crashes occurred towards the end of the race leading to the race being stopped during the leader's 145th lap, requiring a windback to the completed 144th lap. However, many cars had crashed prior to the leader's completion of the 144th lap so the race was woundback an additional lap to allow them to be placed. Due to this windback, Richard's car which had hit the wall once suffering extensive damage—drivable but barely so—and had then slid off the track to join several other cars that had crashed at Forrest's Elbow, was the winner since it was the lead car. Due to high concentrations of Ford and Holden fans and spectators generally upset that a crashed car had won race winner Jim Richards, who drove a Nissan, was vociferously booed as he took the podium. Distressed over his friend's death and the crowd's reaction, in his very brief, international live feed broadcast victory speech he told the spectators, "You're a pack of arseholes."
Controversial law changes made this the last race in which Godzilla was permitted to race; other manufacturers simply could not compete with the Gibson Motor Sport cars. Rather than attempt to produce competitive vehicles the Skyline was effectively banned.
Veteran driver and former Formula One world champion Denny Hulme died of a heart attack suffered during lap 33.

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
And this is what happened on the other side of that infamous race...
The first of the "V8 Supercar" years, and a redneck attitude to racing.
You can spot the odd BMW M3 in this montage because they were given dispensation to run for one more year, the Longhurst/Gardner "Benson and Hedges" Team would switch to a V8 for 1994.

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
An example of how the equivalency formula in early 90s aussie group A made racing a complete head-fudge.
I did make a thread about Group A touring cars when some of the great cars of the era were made available for Forza 3.

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
Are these the same spec cars as the group A all japan touring championship R32 skylines?? Weird fact "drift King" Keiichi Tsuchiya drove one of those to win a win in that championship lol. . . .

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
For 1990 and 1991 I believe it would have been the same spec as the Japanese Championship. CAMS (the aussie MSA) saw fit to peg the car back from 610 to 480 bhp just to keep the competition close, It sort of didnt.

I take it just the sheer 4 WD of the thing won it bit like red bull domination in F1 at the moment lol

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
The reason Touring Car Racing suffers so much these days is due to the lack of rules commonality between the big championships.
Group A was the first international ruleset, and the four big series at the time used these rules (BTCC, ATCC, ETCC, DTM), and all the championships were extremely popular in their home countries.
When it came to having a WTCC in '87, all the races and drivers were already in place. As well as the traditional ETCC venues, the WTCC ventured to Australia to run two races, including the Bathurst 1000. At each of the WTCC races, there were massive local entries from the domestic championship. The big cars, long races and big crowds made the races epic affairs, most were much longer than a Grand Prix.
Now we have so many different specs its hard to count them:
BTCC: BTC-T, S2000, NGTC
STCC: S2000, NGTC/TTA - they are still quarreling over this, and it looks like there will be an Indycar style ''split'' happening.
DTM: New Gen cars for 2012 (Will be used for Super GT at some point in the future)
WTCC: S2000 (1.6T engines)
V8 Supercar (ATCC): Car of the Future
BTCC wants to get back to its glory days by attracting teams rather than manufacturers with the NGTC rules.
The STCC doesn't really know what it wants.
The DTM are looking for more manufacturer interest, and need to spice up the racing.
The WTCC are struggling for manufacturers, but have promising support from the fans at places like Hungary, but they still need the manufacturers that are clearly not there.
V8 Supercar wants to be like NASCAR. Redneck racing for Aussies. The manufactured Holden/Ford rivalry has sunken the Aussie public opinion to the point were they would boycott a race that had a foreign manufacturer in it..

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
@nicky at least the DTM have/are moving away from total reliance on aero. The new BMW looks abit more promising but the current cars were so aero reliant there was no real passing which is, lets face it, at the core of touring cars.
The WTCC is struggling because their quivalent of the TWG has plsyed around with the balancing to the point where it was virtually changing from race to race and no one knew where they stood. I can certainly understand why BMW and SEAT got upset about it. Added to that the use of the 1.6T engine and you have series that no one really wants to win and just isn't attractive to the maufacturers.
The V8SC works just the way it is. It kind of doesn;t matter there are only two manufacturers in there because the racing is always so good. Even to international audiences it sells well because it's very rarely boring. You focus on the drivers and teasm over the manufacturers in that series anyway.
It's a special product and I guess it's appeal isn't so much the Ford v Holden rivalry but the personalities involved. Certainly that's why I watch it anyway.

Re: The TORA Random Video Multiplex.
I will be watching them all as I always do, but I'm really just sad that there is no real commonality anymore, which is robbing us of a proper WTCC.
I love the Aussie V8's for the long races (back to back on weekends!) and the really great cars and drivers involved. I really should watch it more than I do normally.
