Re: Sport!
Lest we forget, they went to Mexico twice, and it was just as hot there... there were also occasions at USA 94 (not a footballing nation (at the time)) when it was "lethal" temperatures...generic winter world cup blargh

Re: Sport!
Currently watching the Timbers get chopped by Royal Salt Lake.
Thankfully there's a 2nd leg for the Timbers to come back with, and I hope the away goals count.

FIFA World Cup 2014 Draw:
GROUP A: Brazil, Cameroon, Mexico, Croatia.
GROUP B: Spain, Chile, Australia, Holland.
GROUP C: Colombia, Ivory Coast, Japan, Greece.
GROUP D: Italy, Uruguay, Costa Rica, England.
GROUP E: Switzerland, Ecuador, Honduras, France.
GROUP F: Argentina, Nigeria, Iran, Bosnia.
GROUP G: Germany, Ghana, USA, Portugal.
GROUP H: Belgium, Algeria, South Korea, Russia
Now I'm not saying that FIFA are corrupt, but France have got arguably the easiest group...

Re: Sport!
All the more reason to put them in the easiest group Seriously though, England fans are panicking about the group but it IS the World Cup, we will have to play big teams in all stages of the competition. Everyone has earned their place there. I'm thinking an outside bet on Holland, 25/1.

Nice to see the typical Scotsmans support for a home nation. I assume you'll be supporting 'Anyone but England'?.

Re: Sport!
^^^ With reactions like this, what do you expect to happen Kilroy, this is the sport thread, not the national bile thread.
There hasn't been a world cup in south america since 1978, there are twice as many teams competing for the same goal, and the last time Brazil hosted it in 1950, as clear favourites, they lost in the Final*. Australia can potentially do some damage here, they've been used to playing in south america.
You never know, I reckon its all about adapting to the atmosphere, the culture, the surroundings. France were obvious favourites in 2002, and went out after the first three games. As did Argentina and Portugal. If they did prepare for it well enough, then it may have been purely bad luck. There were no suprises in 2006, because the majority of the players played in Europe anyways. Cant really remember much of 2010 thanks to the noise, but I cannot recall any big suprise results in that finals either.ErebusV8 wrote:god we have spain,

Re: Sport!
Look at it this way, If Scotland qualified and England didn't, I wouldn't be willing them to get beaten and knocked out as soon as possible. I'd be chuffed for Scotland if they got to the finals, and I'd want them to do well. They represent the United Kingdom. Anyway, we've stumbled off topic...
Group B is a very difficult group, despite a potential upset, I don't see Australia getting through the group stages, Spain & Holland are simply too good. Group G is something else. Germany are phenomenal, Portugal have the best player in the world in their side, Ghana are arguably the best team in Africa right now & the USA are rapidly improving with every tournament. It will be a very good World Cup, and I really couldn't call who would win it.

Re: Sport!
I didn't mean to start a nationalist debate, but put it this way, if you were driving through London or Manchester, would you see massive billboards with slogans like ''Come on Wales/Northern Ireland/Scotland, we're behind you!'' etc? Or advertisements on buses telling you to buy the new kit of a country you don't live in? Or have to sit through hours of pointless minute detail coverage of a country that isn't yours?
It's not a crazed nationalist thing, it's just really annoying and I'm sick of it. Sure, it's 50 million of you vs 10 million of us, but that doesn't mean we don't exist. The media just gets on my tits during any big tournament. Perhaps if there was a bit less hype and a bit more honest action on England's front, we'd get behind them.
I'm merely venting the frustrations of having the English national team shoved down my throat every two seconds by the media, despite not being English and not being too bothered. But I've happily supported English sportsman/racing drivers in the past, and as I've probably made clear in the past, I'm not all that crazy about Paul De Resta. He actually annoys me
Hope this clears things up, I know how you feel about such matters Kilroy

To be honest, I had no idea that this happened in Scotland. The MLS Championship game has been one for the ages. I'd suggest watching it if you didn't, and will not post the results.

Re: Sport!
Adrian, as I said it was a good game... the second half especially. If you find a way to watch it online, you can skip the whole first half and see an even better game than if you had seen it live.

Re: Sport!
Gotta agree with the anti England in major
Tournament comments. Every two years the whole
Country goes mental with "Come on England" bull and every two years the overpaid, oxygen-sapping, brain-cell lacking morons get knocked out well before they apparently should be, and them everyone gets all sad about it.
I'm Half welsh. Born in England raised in England. I'll always support Wales first. Because the Welsh attitude to sport is so much better than the English attitude. First and foremost you're representing your country, not putting yourself in a shop window for a bigger pay cheque.
Typical English sporting attitude: in 2007 I was 'offered' the chance to represent England in the Internations karting championship vs Scotland, wales, Northern Ireland and Republic (who never actually showed). I was delighted, until I found out I'd be expected to cough up nearly £2000 for the weekend event, which at the time was my entire budget for the year. I was gutted , and more so when I found out the others teams expected nothing from their drivers. Go figure
