Re: SCIENCE thread!
Europe are to build the service module for the Orion crew vehicle. Director of human spaceflight at ESA hinted at the possibility of a European being part of the crew for EM-2, the first crewed flight of the Orion, which will travel into lunar orbit, spending four days within the vicinity of the moon to validate Orion systems.
NASA also produced a nice animation of EM-1, showing the unmanned debut of the SLS, currently scheduled for December 2017. But I can't post it here till I get a laptop to use.
Orion's debut flight (EFT-1) is scheduled for mid-2014, and SpaceX hope to send their own test pilots into orbit by 2015. Exciting times on human spaceflight!

Re: SCIENCE thread!
I do prefer Sierra Nevada's 'Dreamchaser'. It's a mini-shuttle looking thing, capable of orbital flights. I can't wait to see that fly.
The idea is that NASA will lease spacecraft from SpaceX, Sierra Nevada, and possibly Boeing, while NASA themselves start concentrating on deep space missions and infrastructure (L2 outpost, and a possible ressurection of the Altair LSAM to enable lunar surface ops).

Re: SCIENCE thread!
December 2017 - the first step in returning human presence to cis-lunar space, the launch of EM-1 (SLS-1/Orion-2).
The difference between what NASA is doing now with SLS/Orion compared to Apollo, is that Apollo was 100% focused on getting a man to the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.
This new direction (notice how NASA are deliberately not giving the missions or spacecraft any specific 'epic' sounding name like 'Apollo', or the 'Project Constellation' of the Bush administration) is more like the Space Shuttle Program. They won't really know what to do with SLS/Orion until they start getting out there. It's capability driven, rather than goal driven. Apollo wasn't about learning how to fly in deep space, it was about landing on the moon. To carry out a sustainable exploration of the solar system, we had to recede from the Moon and do the hard work in Earth orbit to learn lessons. We've now had many many many more hours of spaceflight under our belts. One Shuttle mission was many times more complex than even an Apollo lunar sortie. It is only now where we can naturally expand our reach in a sustainable and cooperative way. Apollo only got to the Moon because of the Cold War scenario.
Anyway, I won't bore you any more... Here's an article on an engineering study that Boeing have put together with regards to future missions to Mars:

Notice how 'USS Discovery' the ship will likely look

Re: SCIENCE thread!
Yeah, although I'll eat my hat if it ever comes to fruition.
The Golden Spike project is one to watch though. It would use existing hardware, and Grumman have been contracted to build a lander.

NASA Curiosity Rover Collects First Martian Bedrock Sample
PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Curiosity rover has, for the first time, used a drill carried at the end of its robotic arm to bore into a flat, veiny rock on Mars and collect a sample from its interior. This is the first time any robot has drilled into a rock to collect a sample on Mars.
freakin awesome

Re: SCIENCE thread!
As some people may know, there is a 150 ft Asteroid passing by Earth at some point tonight called 2012 DA14 and its rather close, just 17,200 miles.
This morning (I think) in Russia a much smaller meteor fell to Earth and exploded over a town causing 500 people to be injured, windows to be blown out in the town and a factory collapsed. The damaged factory was caused by once piece of the meteor. Some of the videos below are pretty incredible, and fortunately nobody has been killed by it.
Warning - Rather Loud
I'll be looking out for the big one tonight.
