It's not all doom and gloom if you're too old for karting!!!
There's plenty of Motorsports which are affordable to enter in; even if means entering something like the Historic saloon car championship for example. They reckon it costs about 10 grand a year; which includes your car for the whole season.
I'm hoping one day to start doing something like that.

for me its a pretty late start....i was 13 when i started.
My friend who is a Easykart National Champion...started when he was 5 years old...
But like dan is saying, there are other motorsports, they might not be as proffesional as DTM, or BTCC, or any of those series.
But, you could also, just by a cheap car, make it into a race car, and enter different enduros(semi-pro). Like britcar 24, or Nurburgring 24h.

The Karting Club Empty Re: The Karting Club

Post by Matt Sun 14 Dec 2008 - 16:26

I started karting when I was 12 at an indoor track near Exeter. Did that for a few years then kind of dropped it while I did all my exams etc. Then picked it up again when I got to uni and ran with their race team doing regional events and the BUKC which is a championship for universities using Club 100 stuff.

Not many pics of me racing sadly as I tend to be the one doing the photography myself!!

My personal best result was a second in a Cardiff Uni 1-2 against the best South Wales had to offer! lol. In the rain, sleet, fog and night we somehow completed an endurance distance and didnt lose our positions once!! Audi eat your heart out!
Since then I haven't done much more karting outside of my old job at the indoor track. But through connections have scored a couple of good tests in various types of car Wink
Maybe one day something will actually come of it lol

I rekon there are plenty people out there who are older who have never been able to get seriously strated in karting/racing from a young age. They could probably race with the likes of top racing drivers, but they never had the opportunity

In the United States, its not uncommon to start when your 13 or 14, but in the world of racing, that is kind of late.
Usually, you will get into racing(basically, you will go throught the ladder), and you should make it into a starter series(Koni, Skip barbor, etc). But if you start out 16, or 17, it will be very hard to get into racing, mainly because talent scouts(who look for drivers for their teams, or young talents they can develop.) want you to basically "ferment" in karting for atleast 2 years. You probably be in skip barbor or Koni Challenge when your 17.

Cool... best thing I've driven is STILL the F430 GT. Stunning car! Everything I hoped and more! lol.
Next to that was being driven round, in a not extremely controlled manner, in my mates Ariel Atom.

Fave tracks I've RACED at to date (as opposed to just been on) would be Llandow and Clay Pigeon. Didn't get on too well with Buckmore.

Do you use the full circuit with the extra loop section.... love that bit.Kinda reminds me of the new section on the Nurburgring hehe. In hot (sticky tyre) conditions thats a helluva section after about an hours driving!!

The short chicane with the high kerbs is pretty fun though I had a habit of riding them too hard and losing chains. (I was very popular with the mechanics there!)

Went to the Track attack the first year it was in Cardiff. Met and chatted to Robby Doornbos and Tonio Liuzzi who had a huge crash infront of us. Sadly none of our team were in it.

The only problem with the new loop section (yes, we use it lol) is in really hot conditions, you get awful hopping around there, then you cant breathe when you come off the track where your ribs have swapped sides Very Happy
