Dont know much about vw engines but you might look at putting in a crank scraper. helps keep oil from roping and frees up a few hp.

You'll be talking around £2500 to build the cAr
£400 for licence
£400-500 for all safety wear
And about £1000 for your yearly entry fees, bearing in mind, it's at all of the UKs top venues and it's all telivised too
