Kerbal Space Program
http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/
If any of you know me well, you'd know I'm a huge fan of science, space, etc etc. I studied physics in college and I was going to study it in Uni too, until I realised that the course was kinda dull in Uni (and it wasn't my ideal career choice...). If you Like Nurbracer on Facebook, you might have seen some of my scientific ramblings as well
Anyway, KSP is awesome. If you've played it, you're awesome. If you haven't, you're halfway there. It's basically a fictional space exploration simulator, where you build your own hopelessly pathetic spaceships and crash them into the moon. Sound awesome? Duh, of course it is!
The game is similar to Minecraft or pCARS in that it is in a public Beta, being updated every month or so. The free demo of KSP is on version 1.3.3, which (compared to the current 1.7/1. is crappy. I'd highly recommend spending the mere $18 for the rest of the game... It's more than worth it once you've seen the features they're adding in the future.
It's not too resource-heavy on the ol' PC either. My laptop runs it fine (bar huge colossal spaceships - ships are programmed in a tree-like structure) yet still has problems with other games (for instance, FSX).
If you play it or have played it, feel free to share ideas, ships, missions etc. I plan on getting to the outer planets one day. It's highly difficult at the moment but they're adding things like space docking and solar panels in the next update, which should make it much much easier
A YouTuber called Kurt makes great videos on KSP, watch them here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=EL4fj56nWTSV8&feature=plcp

Hehe, I've played this before. Awesome wee game.
It was always a nice fun break from err (yes, I'm an utter gonk about space) Orbiter space flight simulator!

Stumbled across kurts videos recently.
This'll be the first thing I buy when I get my new laptop. Definitely. TORA space program!

Re: Kerbal Space Program
love this game, but it chews the cr*p out of my battery, and i always end up spiriling in the atmosphere n pluminting back, or by passing th moon and heading for the sun...
Re: Kerbal Space Program
I love KSP!
Dont have it though, just watcing kurtjmac play it is interesting enough.
Have it on in the background while forzaing.
Im a bit of a mindcrack server junkie too. Watching the pranks they play
is great fun

Re: Kerbal Space Program
I've recently been trying to create a Space Shuttle type vehicle, with a fuel tank and SRBs. But the game's mechanics won't allow it and it just spirals out of control when the fuel starts to run out and the weight is unbalanced.
So instead I'm going to go with a Halo Sabre design, which is basically a massive shuttle which detaches from a smaller orbiter shuttle. The only problem is of course fuel...
And if all else fails, I'm going to make something akin to the Normandy SR2

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Best to attach a winged orbiter vertically, surely? It's probably impossible to get the right thrust balance when going for the sidemount option.
I've a lot of experience with the Orbiter Sim, landed on the moon a couple of times with the excellent AMSO mod. Kerbal looks much more fun though!

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Bit low on the cash, so I've been having some fun with the demo.
My Shengis VIB booster is currently under development. It's already proved a stable craft in launch conditions, safely launching my Kerbals into an equatorial sub-orbital trajectory. A modified variant, the Shengis VIC, will include a new upper stage for performing orbital insertion and retro burns.
It took me a while to get the design right. The original Shengis V was a total failure, as was the Shengis VB. I experimented with a seven engined launcher, the Shengis VII, and achieved a polar orbit around Kerbin, but it was far too unstable during launch. The original all-liquid Shengis VI suffered from similar problems.
The next step is to achieve an equatorial orbit, and beyond that, I'll try out a circum-munar flight, with the hope of performing a munar landing in the not too distant future.
Such an awesome game! Can't wait to try out the newer version.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Well I went and downloaded the demo. Where did the last 3 hours go!? What a great little game. Managed to break Orbit of the planet once, but my little guy was lost forever as he picked up the obit of the Sun.
Keep making silly mistakes with sections, and engine keep firing at random points - by my lack of skill. Having fun though, was going to upgrade as it doesn't cost much and I want to support them but is there much else in the full game to play with? Not much choice parts wise in the demo anyway.
Is there somewhere where I can download other peoples ships? My imagination just keeps making Apollo style rockets

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Buy the full game, trust me There's about x1000 the amount of things you can do in the full game (and upcoming versions). When you get into the groove of it there'll be days you want to take a day off work to play it
You can download other ships from the SpacePort, which I think is accessible from the game's main menu as well.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Having some more fun with this today, I'll try a munar transfer later, seeing how I've worked out how to shift my orbital inclination.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Managed - in the demo - to get one of the little guys completely lost in space and on an orbit with the sun.
Since I bought it I have been really struggling to get up into space. I nearly achieved an orbit of the planet but ran out of fuel. I also keep messing up the SCS fuel tanks and keep jettisoning them early.
I am also having a lot of structural issues, and sometimes the ship will fall apart on the pad. Weird thing is, it was fine this morning and then when I took a few things off it just kept falling apart.
Been watching some of Kurts videos but I also watched a few of Scott Manley's videos. This guys makes it look far far too easy.
Such an awesome little game though.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
If it's falling apart, just put loads and loads of struts on it. And I mean loads. Also if your game lags it will also effect the structural integrity of ships; look at the timer in the top left - Green is good, yellow is "laggy, watch out", and red is "She's gonna blow!"
Watching Kurt probably isn't the best way to learn the ins and outs of KSP, he isn't exactly rolling in skill himself.. Scott is awesome though, he's done some really good tutorial videos, and he's recently been doing a 100% reusable project thing.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
That voyage to eloo is insane.
It's worth just attempting orbital flights and messing around with circularising orbits and shifting inclinations.
Spaceflight is a tricky thing to get a hang of, but once you nail the basics, then you can begin to experiment with munar flights and such.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Well, after watching a few vids I managed to get into orbit, I then set off on an orbit to the Mun...which I duly messed up. Tried again and was too far away. So I headed back to Kerbal, did a few orbit changes to get into a nice round orbit, brought the ship down and then detached the control pod and landed safely not all that far away from the Space Centre. I would say that was relatively successful and felt great after it. However I now have two rather large parts of the ship left on a low circular orbit.
Re: Kerbal Space Program
Managed to get into Munar orbit today, which I was pretty chuffed about.
I remember landing on the Moon in Orbiter 2010 with the AMSO Apollo mod, it's one of the most tense gaming experiences I've ever had.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
I was briefly watching a KSP stream earlier, and a KSP dev shared a 0.19 video.
I can't find it now as the video was unlisted, but it looked pretty cool. It was basically a demonstration of the new rover wheels. They're just stuck on the ship like any other part, and you can toggle each wheel's steering. Also the tyres burst if they take too much an impact, but you can EVA and repair each one manually.

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Managed to get a satellite in Kerbin orbit, and then sent one far out past the second moon/planet thing. On a very high Kerbin Orbit, but a bit of a push and it'll be sent away to another planet. It took a bit of damage however during take off as one of the decouplers didn't send the rocket in a good direction and I got a wobble on, which tore off one of my solar panels. Still, it's happily away on it's journey.
Gutted I can't play it for 2 week snow though

Re: Kerbal Space Program
Right, I'm doing regular munar flights now. Managed to get into a free return trajectory (Apollo 13 style), but the pretty steep re-entry (around 10g's..) ripped my chutes off.. Poor Jebidiah...
Bill is stuck in orbit after me pressing space too many times during the TMI burn..
A rescue mission may have to be attempted at some point.. But otherwise, I'm wasting Kerbin's tax dollars!
